The long dark night

0

The winter solstice, Dec. 21, is the longest night of the year. We could say, it is a long dark night. Prolonged darkness can lead to depression and cause emotional distress. In Utqiagvik, Alaska, there is a period of about 60 days that the sun does not rise. Imagine, living in constant darkness for over two months. It is said there is a notable increase in suicide during this dark period.

Dear Dietitian,

A little micro nonfiction from Vietnam Veterans

0

At recent meeting of the war memoir writing group at the Miami Valley Veterans Museum, I introduced the participants to an approach poet Anna Caters uses which I call creative non-fiction micro-fiction with American haikus. This is a rather long descriptor; however, it explains that these veterans were recording experiences from their military lives with a few words (I advised using 100 or fewer although micro can be up to 300), The story is then followed by an American haiku in which the author may express a reaction to the story using three lines of poetry. Japanese haiku use syllables in the lines as follows, 5,7,5, and usually have an image from nature. We Americans are independent rebels and do whatever we like, but we usually use three short lines.

The vices of dieting advice

What can we discuss while we wait for our Thanksgiving repasts to digest? Black Friday shopping? No matter what some people think, I prefer to write about things of which I have first hand knowledge and the day after Thanksgiving shopping craze isn’t one of them. First of all, it’s badly misnamed. Black Friday is not nearly descriptive enough. It ought to be called Too Awful Friday or Crowded Madness Friday or Consumer Activities for the Insane Friday.

Have you seen Scott’s version of Napoleon?

I became interested in Director Ridley Scott’s latest production, “Napoleon,” when I read a review that indicated that the French were not particularly satisfied with his portrayal of Napoleon, so my husband and I headed to the local theatre.
