Local piano students compete

ADA — The Midwest Duettist (Piano) Competition was presented Oct. 29 by the Midwest Music Teachers Association at Ohio Northern University.

Thirteen teams from Ka-Jens Piano Studio in Sidney, under the direction of Kathleen Jendrusik, the founder and chairwoman of the competition, competed with other teams from throughout midwestern Ohio. The duet pairs are required to play one classical piece in formal attire and one creative piece in full costume and makeup, using props relating to their compositions. They were graded on poise and presentation, creativity, clear melody phrasing, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and if they conveyed the spirit of the music.

There were five levels of difficulty. Local results are as follows:

In the first level of Elementary, first place went to Amelie Phillips, daughter of Keith and Sonya Phillips, and Julia Huelskamp, daughter of Ted and Abigail Huelskamp, all of Sidney; fourth place was won by Cassie Heath, daughter of Scott and Molly Heath, of Sidney, and Abby Burkett, daughter of Jeff and CariBeth Noah, of Maplewood, and Dean and Sunshine Burkett, of Fort Worth, Texas.

Late Elementary winners were Haley Cox, daughter of Aaron and Mindy Cox, of Quincy, and Alice Chrisman, daughter of Joseph and Heather Chrisman, of Sidney, third place; Meredith Klein, daughter of Eric and Sarah Klein, of Anna, and Gabi Pelletier, daughter of Marc and Dena Pelletier, of Minster, fourth place; Ryan Nichols, son of Darren Nichols and Kelly McCarty, of Anna, and Alayna Rindler, daughter of Alan and June Rindler, of Versailles, fifth place.

Early Intermediate winners were Martha Chrisman, daughter of Joseph and Heather Chrisman, of Sidney, and Luke Hamaker, son of Shawn and Stacy Hamaker, of Fletcher, first place; Myla Cox, daughter of Aaron and Mindy Cox, of Quincy, and Brooklyn Jackson, daughter of Shane and Nichole Jackson, of Troy, third place; Taylor Bisbee, daughter of Mike and Jill Bisbee, of Sidney and Grace Francis, daughter of Russell and Donna Francis, of Versailles, fifth place; McKenna and Shannon O’Donnell, daughters of Mike and Robyn Gossard, of Sidney, and Patrick and Heather O’Donnell, of Lewistown, sixth place.

Intermediate winners were Lola and Loralei Chambers, daughters of Lorraine Rose, of Sidney, first place; Myla Cox, daughter of Aaron and Mindy Cox, of Quincy, and Keagan Smith, son of Doug and Karen Smith, of Sidney, third place; Liliana Phillips, daughter of Keith and Sonya Phillips, and Colton Smith, son of Doug and Karen Smith, all of Sidney, fourth place.

Maris Wiseman, daughter of Richard and Paula Wiseman, of Anna, and Grace Francis, daughter of Russell and Donna Francis, of Versailles, took first place honors in the Late Intermediate Early Advanced division.
