Watercolor workshop set in Piqua

PIQUA — Internationally acclaimed watercolorist Steven Kozar will teach a four-day, watercolor workshop for the Piqua Arts Council, beginning Tuesday.

The workshop sessions will be from 5 to 9 p.m., through March 31, in the Schmidlapp Free School Library, 509 N. Main St. Piqua. The fee is $350, which includes dinners, and registration can be made by calling 937-773-9630.

Kozar does hyper-realistic paintings in one of the most challenging mediums available. He is planning to cover a range of topics and address the needs of the participants from beginner to near masters in watercolor.

Kozar has been painting as a full-time professional artist since 1986 (right after he dropped out of art school). He primarily paints using watercolor, although he also uses oil or acrylic on occasion. There are no “tricks” to his paintings. They are all painted using a paintbrush (with very rare use of an airbrush). His paintings are based on actual places that he has visited and photographed.

Kozar’s paintings have been sold in art galleries in Chicago, Milwaukee, Washington, D.C., New York and, most recently, in London at the Plus One Gallery.

“Without a doubt, Steven is helping the Piqua Arts Council achieve their goals with the workshop series,” said Jordan Knepper, executive director of the Piqua Arts Council. “When we applied for the money from the Ohio Arts Council, we wanted our workshop series to be different from any other one in the state. We wanted ours to draw awareness to Piqua and help people from outside of the area see how impressive of a city Piqua can be. We also wanted a workshop series that featured the best artists in the United States, if not the world. By bringing in these masters of their media, we’re providing opportunities for artists throughout the state to come and learn from the very best of each discipline.”

More information about the Piqua Arts Council’s Workshop Series can be found at www.PiquaArtsCouncil.org or by calling 937-773-9630. The fall workshop will feature renowned oil painter and Airstream Invitational Winner Stephen Fox. Registration for the fall workshop, scheduled for Oct. 3 through Oct. 6, is already open.
