NEW BREMEN — The Rev. Becky Erb Strang, senior pastor of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in New Bremen, makes gingersnaps for her congregation.
She uses a family recipe that came from her mother, retired Rev. Jean Erb, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Strang recently shared the recipe with her parisioners through the church newsletter and now shares it with Sidney Daily News readers.
MOLASSES GINGERSNAPS
Beat together:
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup dark molasses
1 cup shortening
Once combined, add:
3 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ginger
1 teaspoon each cloves, nutmg and allspice
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
Mix well. Roll into 1-inch balls; roll balls through a bowl of sugar. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes, until lightly browned on the bottom.
