Fire damages duplex

SIDNEY — No injuries were reported following an early morning fire Saturday.

At 1:34 a.m. Saturday, Sidney firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 891 Merri Lane; Sidney, Ohio. The home is owned by Marlin Laws and occupied by Joshua, Krystal, Lorrie and Annabella Wriston and Isabella Young.

The occupants had evacuated the structure prior to the arrival of fire crews. A box alarm was called to recall all off-duty fire personnel and mutual aid was received from Lockington Fire Department and Anna Fire Department for a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT).

When Sidney firefighters arrived, they found fire and heavy smoke coming from the basement of the duplex. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the situation and performed a search to confirm that all occupants and pets were accounted for. DP&L was called to the scene to secure the utilities to the structure.

The home received heavy smoke damage to the basement and first floor. The basement received moderate fire damage. Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 3 1/4 hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Sidney/Shelby County Fire Investigation Unit.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The Wristons are being assisted by Red Cross with lodging and other immediate needs.
