Champion animals sell at the fair

SIDNEY — Bids were being made in a frenzy Saturday morning as the rabbits, hogs, and gallon of milk were sold during the Junior Fair livestock sale at the 2016 Shelby County Fair.

The animal to sell for the most Saturday was the reserve champion gilt hog. It was sold by Makenna Snider, 11, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Luke and Jennifer Snider, a member of Fort Loramie Livestock, to 29 buyers for $3,700. Last year the same set a record in selling for $10,300. The buyers this year were Auto Repair Unlimited, B & B Ag-Vantages Inc., Best One Tire, Tony Bornhorst, Clerk of Courts Michele Mumford, Commissioner Julie Ehemann, Davis Meats, Ltd., Jim and Elaine Egbert and Family, Heins SHow Pigs, Lotz Insurance Agency, Shelby County Treasurer Linda Meininger, Minster Bank, NAPA First CAll Auto Parts, Provinco Farm and Show Supply, Commissioner Robert Guillozet, Schafer Oil Company, Shelby County Republican Party, Sidney Body Carstar, Silveus Insurance, Trent Snavely, Tom and Jerry’s, Trenor Motors Inc., Trupoint, Wagner’s IGA Market, Ward Family Genetics, Henman Investments, AJB Automation, Carity Farms, First Choice Excavation and Demolition, LLC.

The grand champion gilt hog was sold by Micah Smock, 16, of Botkins, son of Phil and Mary Lee Smock, a member of Botkins Livestock, for $3,400 to 23 buyers. The same in 2015 was sold for $3,725. The buyers this year were Bambauer Fertilizer and Seed, Bobcat of Lima, Bornhorst Printing, Tony Bornhorst, Brian Hough Farms Pioneer Seed/Crop Inc., Kent and Shelly Buehler, Charlie and Mary Jo Cole, Davis Meats, Egbert Livestock Botkins and St. Henry, First National Bank of New Bremen, Fultz Flooring, Fred Billie Homan and Family, Jeff Metz Construction, Lacal Equipment, Meyer’s Tavern, Provico Farm and Show Supply, Commissioner Robert Guillozet, Shelby County Republican Party, Smock Farms – Wayne and Dorothy, Zimpfer Farms, Coffield for Treasurer, and Gibbs Insurance.

Evan Argabright, 16, of Jackson Center, son of Darren and Jennifer Argabright, a member of Anna FFA, sold his grand champion barrow for $3,000 to 13 buyers. Last year the grand champion barrow set a record in selling for $10,100. The buyers this year were A G Boogher and Sons Inc., Argabright Family Farms, Bambauer Fertilizer and Seed, Kent and Shelly Buehler, Davis Meats, Design-N-Wood, Jim and Elaine Egbert and Family, First National Bank of New Bremen, Lotz Insurance Agency, Lotz Service, P and T LLC, Schmerge Show Pigs, and Merit Mechanical.

The reserve champion barrow was sold by Conner Smock, 13, of Botkins, son of Phil and Mary Lee Smock, a member of Botkins Livestock. It was sold to 20 buyers for $2,900. In 2015 it was sold for $3,000. The buyers were Bambauer Fertilizer and Seed, Bobcat of Lima, Bornhorst Printing, Brian Hough Farms Pioneer Seed/Crop Inc., Kent and Shelly Buehler, Charlie and Mary Jo Cole, Davis Meats, Egbert Livestock Botkins and St. Henry, First National Bank of New Bremen, Fultz Flooring, Fred Billie Homan and Family, Jeff Metz Construction, Lacal Equipment, Meyer’s Tavern, NAPA First Call Auto Parts, PHC Enterprises, Provico Farm and Show Supply, Smock Farms – Wayne and Dorothy, Coffield for Treasurer, and Gibbs Insurance.

Megan Maurer, 17, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Jim and Linda Maurer, a member of Merry Mod Makers, sold her grand champion meat pen rabbit to 11 buyers for $1,500. In 2015, the same sold for $2,400. The buyers this year were Tony Bornhorst, HER Realtors, Auctioneer/Realton Troy Kies, Lacal Equipment, Minster Bank, Keith Motter and Family, Commissioner Robert Guillozet, Shelby County Republican Part, State Representative Jim Buchy, E & P Rabbitry, and Coffield for Treasurer.

The reserve champion meat pen rabbit was sold by Madison Kipp, 9, of Anna, daughter of Jeremy and Kara Kipp, a member of Anna Livestock, to 10 buyers for $700. Last year the reserve champion meat pen rabbit was sold for $500. The buyers were A G Boogher and Son, Inc., Almost A Farm, Bambauer Fertilizer and Seed, Commissioner Julie Ehemann, Donald A. Sommer Inc., First National Bank of New Bremen, HER Realtors, Maria Stein Grain, Plastipak Packaging Inc., and Sorensen Insurance Agency.

Kara Gillman, 17, of Sidney, daughter of Kathy and Kevin Gillman, a member of Adventures 4-H Club, sold the grand champion single fryer rabbit to six buyers for a total of $1,050. In 2015 the grand champion single dryer rabbit sold for $775. The buyers this year were Commissioner Julie Ehemann, Gibbs Farms LLC, Plastipak Packaging Inc., Sidney Body Carstar, State Representative Jim Buchy, and Coffield for Treasurer.

The reserve champion single fryer rabbit was sold to two buyers for $1,700 by Myles Platfoot, 10, of Maplewood, son of Scott and Cathy Platfoot, a member of Progressive Livestock. Last year the reserve champion single fryer rabbit was sold for $750. The buyers this year were Buckeye Online Equipment Auctions Inc., and Lentz Auction.

This year the gallon of milk raised more than it did last year. It made $16,600; in 2015 it raised $14,900. The buyers were Ron and Marcia Wiessinger, Bliss & Bloom Floral and Gifts, Botkins Family Dental, Woody’s Market, DRB Farms, Geise Welding, Gina Troll Chinese Gourmet, Fun Food Concessions, Coffield for Treasurer, and Andy Allenbaugh.
