ST. MARYS — U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan told St. Marys Rotary members Wednesday that he expects GOP members will join together before the November general election in an effort to defeat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election.

The Urbana Republican said many feel the U.S. is going in the wrong direction.

“Sixty percent of adults feel they had it better than their parents but their children will be worse off,” Jordan said. “Seventy percent think America is in decline. Eighty percent feel the system is rigged against them.”

He said recent events have only proved the public’s feelings correct. He said the politically connected are being given a second set of rules to go by. He pointed out the fact that Clinton was not indicted and lack of action against IRS Commissioner John Koskinen as evidence to support their feelings.

“You know why 80 percent think that is,” Jordan asked. “Its because it is. We witnessed some things here. When you have the director of the FBI lay out what he uncovers in his investigation and lays it out in a compelling way, and then says, ‘Oh, by the way, there isn’t going to be any charges,’ suddenly the American people saying what we suspected you have confirmed. One standard for the politically connected, and another standard for others. That isn’t how it is supposed to work.”

Jordan referred to a recent Time magazine story that pointed out each living U.S. citizen owes $42,980 to service the current debt in the country, a debt he said had doubled in the last 10 years. He argued that it is important for people to take that into consideration when voting in November as he endorsed Donald Trump in the race.

“We need to control spending,” Jordan said. “We need to create an environment that is much more conducive to economic growth.”

He pointed out current U.S. tax codes, overburdening regulations on businesses, and the Affordable Health Care Act as other big contributors to the problem.

“American people are the most generous people on the planet,” Jordan said. “We will help out a single mom with kids. We don’t help out an able-bodied adult male who surfs during the day, plays in a rock band at night, and gets food stamps. We need to incentivize work. In America we work hard. It is what we do.”

When asked if he could “help me feel good about voting for Trump,” Jordan pointed to what is at stake. He mentioned the Benghazi, Libya, incident and the decisions Trump has made so far.

“He selected (Mike) Pence as his running mate,” Jordan said. “He is somebody who shares the views of most of the people in this room right now. He has submitted a list of names for Supreme Court justices. I could not envision one policy that Clinton has that I would agree with. I know there are things I agree with Donald Trump on.”
