125 Years November 4, 1891

If Sidney is not booming in all departments it at least is in good company. A traveling man says that he does not know of any town that is boasting of a vast trade in all branches; that where he has seen one doing more than Sidney he has seen 99 doing less. To make it better, he says Sidney is the best town of its size he has been in this year. This is said of the Valley City so often that there must be a great deal in it.

The Mendelssohn Club, under the direction of Miss Ingersoll, is rehearsing frequently that ever-charming opera, “Chimes of Normandy,” and will present it at the Monumental opera house on Thanksgiving night. No effort is being spared to make the presentation the event of the season. Staley’s splendid orchestra in full will assist during the entire opera.

100 Years November 4, 1916

Approximately 200 parents were guests at the high school building last evening when members of the sophomore class were hosts and hostesses. The welcome to the parents was extended by Wilbur Dill, president of the class. The girls of the class served refreshments with the assistance of Miss Elizabeth Newhall, domestic science teacher.

With Dick Wolf at quarterback and Rusty Blake leading the way, the Sidney High School football team defeated Greenville High School at Lakeside Park yesterday afternoon by a score of 18 to 6. Wolf’s 70-yard dash for a touchdown on the kickoff opening the second half highlighted the game.

75 Years November 4, 1941

Formal presentation of the Navy Bureau of ordinance flag and the Navy “E” pennant to the Monarch Machine Tool Co. for excellence in production will be made late Armistice Day afternoon during the change of shifts at the plant. The presentation on behalf of the Navy will be made by Admiral William Harrison Standley, of Washington. He will be accompanied by other representatives of the Navy Department.

At interesting talk on life and the program of Camp Shelby, Mississippi, where a large number of Sidney soldiers are stationed, was given by PFC Robert Cook, when he spoke at the regular meeting of the Iutis Club last evening.

50 years November 4, 1966

More traffic began moving today on area streets and roads as round-the-clock efforts to remove snow and ice began to bear results. Both Oliver Liggit, deputy director of State Highway Division Seven and County Engineer Carl Roeller voiced belief that all roads will be passable by nightfall.

Full extent of the havoc created by the surprise 10-inch snow of Wednesday were becoming more apparent as hope for relief appeared. In scores of areas, homes were completely cut off from outside travel by drifting snow. Ditched cars and trucks were in the three figure totals and some still were abandoned alongside highways this morning.

PIQUA – Rev. Robert Von Kaenel, pastor of St. Marys Church since 1943, was elevated to monsignor by Bishop Karl Alter, of the Cincinnati diocese.

Rev. Von Kaenel has been head of the Sidney Deanery since July 20 as a successor to Rev. Edward Lehman, former pastor of Sidney Holy Angels Church. Other new monsignors are Rev. Clarence F. Liebold, dean of St. Marys and Rev. Bernard Piening, western Cincinnati.

Rev. Liebold was former pastor of St. Michael Church, Fort Loramie. He is now pastor of Holy Trinity Church at Coldwater.

25 Years November 4, 1991

There is big news from Bellefontaine concerning a Sidney native and her husband. James Arthur, the husband of Stacy Arthur. He was gunned down in the streets of Bellefontaine recently. The killer was James Lindberg a California native who followed Mrs. Arthur here. Lindberg turned his gun on himself before he could be stopped. She is the reigning Mrs. Ohio and also a favorite Playboy calendar model.

A former Sidney football coach has reached a coaching milestone. Brian Deal is taking a team to the Ohio football playoffs for the first time. He is the coach of the Dublin Coffman team. His team is 10-0 and ranked #2 in its division. The team to beat is Cincinnati Princeton.
