Metz, Guillozet re-elected chairman, secretary

SIDNEY — The Shelby County District Health Advisory Council gathered for their annual reorganization meeting to nominate and elect new officers and review the 2016 Annual Health Department Report.

Bruce Metz, village of Jackson Center administrator, was nominated and elected to serve another year as Advisory Council chairperson. This is Metz’s second term. Bob Guillozet, Shelby County commissioner, was nominated and elected to serve another one year term as Advisory Council secretary. Council also reappointed Ted Holthaus to serve another five-year term as Board of Health Member.

Council heard updates related to the various branches that that fall under the health department’s jurisdiction. Health Commissioner Stephen J. Tostrick reviewed Public Health Nursing which includes: Health Promotion, School Health, Communicable Disease Control, Well Child Clinic, Newborn Home Visit Program, Bureau for Children With Medical Handicaps (BCMH), Immunizations, Women, Infants & Children (WIC) and HMG – Home Visiting.

Environmental Director Kent Topp shared updates on the following departments: Sewage Treatment Systems, Housing/Nuisance Conditions, Rabies Control, Food Programs, Camps and Manufactured home Parks, Private Water Systems, Waste Disposal, Body Art/Tattoo and Body Piercing, Schools and Correctional Facilities, Plumbing Program, Swimming Pools and Spas and Smoke Free Workplace.

Tostrick reported that in conjunction with a state grant received by Union County, residents of Shelby County will be eligible to receive a radon test kit by applying online at uchd.net/radon. The test kits are free of charge to all Shelby County residents.

In other business , Topp shared plans for the Sidney-Shelby County Health Department Clean Up Day slated for April 8, 2017 from 8 a.m. to noon. There are two locations where Shelby County Residents can drop off solid waste.

The locations are:

• Jackson Township: Rising Sun Express, state Route 65 in Jackson Center.

• McLean Township: Lake Loramie State Park (Daniels picnic area, corner Fort Loramie Swanders Road and state Route 362)

Items accepted include household garbage and waste, large item trash and junk.

Unacceptable items are tires, herbicides/pesticides, refrigerators/freezers, air conditioners, yard waste, batteries and liquids. For more information contact Topp at 937-498-7249

The city of Sidney and Shelby County will also be holding their annual Super Saturday Recycling Day on the same day, April 8, at the Shelby County Fairgrounds where the following services are provided: electronic recycling, document shredding, book recycling and drug disposal.

Those dropping off items to be recycled will enter at Sidney Middle School off Fair Road and follow signs/cones to the drop off location at the EMA building.
