SIDNEY — The Shelby County United Way women’s initiative group, POWER, received the Association’s Friend of Education award from the Sidney Education Association during its annual awards dinner.

POWER was nominated by Longfellow Elementary kindergarten teachers Kathy Gillman and Peggy Jacob for this year’s award. Initiated in 2015 by POWER, the E.M. Power E.D. program encourages literacy and education for kindergarten students at Longfellow by assisting with weekly tutoring, sponsoring needed supplies, and Feed the Family nights. The goal of the program is to create a positive first experience for the children and help develop the skills needed to become engaged and excited about their education. POWER worked extensively with Longfellow Elementary to develop the program, and is planning to begin a similar experience at Fairlawn Elementary School next fall.

Accepting the award for POWER were representatives Betty Cole, tutor, Shelly Ginter, POWER chair, and Jenny VanMatre, Feed the Family coordinator.
