United Way sets governance seminar

SIDNEY — The Shelby County United Way has opened registrations for a free seminar for nonprofit board members.

The Board Governance Seminar will be June 15 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA, 300 E. Parkwood St. Registration deadline is June 3. To register, call 492-2101.

Participants will enjoy a hot breakfast and talks by attorney Abigail Kline, of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, who will present “Guide for Charity Board Members,” and by Marian Spicer, director of the Community Foundation of Shelby County, who will discuss board development.

The seminar is open to all people sitting on boards of nonprofit, civic and church organizations in Shelby County.

Among the topics to be addressed will be a board’s legal duties, duty of care, board recruitment and board orientation.

“We are excited about this opportunity and are planning future topics to include compliance, risk management, insurance and marketing,” said United Way Executive Director Scott Barr.
