CINCINNATI — The Office of African American Catholic Ministries, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, has announced the 2016-17 Archbishop Karl J. Alter Scholarship Grant Awards.

In 1964, then-Archbishop Karl J. Alter established the Archbishop Alter Scholarship – a four‐year grant – to promote African American Catholic leadership among high school seniors who sought to pursue higher education. It is one of the ways the Archdiocese of Cincinnati assists in developing African American leaders who rise from their communities to affect change in our world. This year’s scholarship recipients each have been awarded a four‐year grant of $1000 per year.

The Archbishop Karl J. Alter Scholarship Recipients for 2016-17 are:

• Samaria A. Colbert, the daughter of Loren Colbert, will graduate from Fairfield High School. Miss Gibson will attend Tennessee State University and will pursue a degree in Computer Science. She is a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Cincinnati’s West End.

• Kassandra M. Lee, daughter of Mr. Kris and Peg Lee, will graduate from Lehman Catholic High School. Miss Lee will attend Otterbein University and will pursue a degree in Nursing. Lee is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Piqua.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati is the 38th largest Catholic diocese in the country, with almost 500,000 Catholics, and has the sixth largest network of Catholic schools in terms of enrollment. The 19-county territory includes 211 parishes and 111 Catholic primary and secondary schools.
