SIDNEY — Sidney High School students who have taken a Workforce Academy class at the school will be taking the next step to obtain their future career goals.

SHS’s Workforce Academy and Workforce Partnership of Shelby County is hosting a hiring expo on April 11-12 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for students who are seeking full-time employment. Twelve business partners in the academy will be on-site to conduct the interviews.

“Our goal is to held find employees ready for the workforce,” said Deb McDermott, Workforce Partnership director, during Monday night’s Sidney City Schools Board of Education meeting. “We want to get the students ready for the workplace.”

Students have been identified as candidates for the interviews based on two criteria: they have taken a Workforce Academy class and they are 18 years of age or older. Current seniors and graduates of SHS who have taken the class are eligible to the interviews.

“We will be matching up the students with several different interviews,” said McDermott. “I think the employers will appreciate this opportunity for interviewing students. It’s a great opportunity for the students also.”

Students will be able to interview for a full-time career and summer employment opportunities.

Businesses participating in the hiring expo are Slagle Mechanical. Kirk NationaLease, Reliable Castings, Continental Express, Wells Brothers, Ferguson Construction, Wayne Trail, Emerson climate Technologies, Ross Casting & Innovation,Panel Control, Sollmann Electric and Electro Controls.

Students have until April 7 to set up interviews with instructors Sharon Maurice and Renee Davis at 937-597-0982.

Instructor Stephanie Davis was also present at the meeting to review the school year thus far in the Workforce Academy program. She said some students are taking a class for college credit through Rhodes State. They will be going to the college to complete their assignments and to a teamwork activity for the class.

Field trips are planned to Wayne Trail and Honda Heritage. Some students, she said, have earned a trip to Kings Island. The students will be participating at Manufacturing Day in May at Emerson Elementary School. They are also doing a landscaping project at Sidney Alive.

Two students and chaperones will be going to India this summer through RCI. They will be visiting companies and technical training institute while in India.

“This is most probably the best curriculum addition we’ve done at the high school,” said Superintendent John Scheu. “The program has also been expanded down into the middle school.”
