Sidney Academia gears up for nationals

SIDNEY — The Sidney High School Academia team will be competing at the high school quiz bowl nationals, the National Scholastic Championship (NSC), June 10-11, in Chicago at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare.

Sidney quiz bowlers will compete against more than 90 other high school teams from around the country and the world. Last year, Sidney tied for 38th place.

The Sidney Academia team are senior NourEddine Hijazi, senior Andrew Mitchell, sophomore Oliver Marchus and freshman Whitney Petty. The team is is coached by Brett Bickel.

Sidney qualified for NSC by winning the Beavercreek Fall Invitational at Beaver Creek High School, Oct. 29, 2016. This season, the team also won its ninth straight Shelby County title and fourth straight league (GWOC North) title, as well as fourth place at the NAQT Ohio State Championship competition.

Those not attending NSC may follow select games of NSC through a liveblog and livestream. Liveblog and livestream details will be announced on pace-nsc.org.

Quizbowl is an academic competition played between two teams of up to four players. Players buzz in on questions, which cover a wide range of academic topics including literature, history, science, and the arts.

Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE), founded in 1996 by a volunteer group of players and coaches, has been promoting high school quizbowl for nearly 20 years. In addition to running the annual National Scholastic Championship, PACE recognizes high quality local tournaments and sponsors the Quizbowl Resource Center, a hub for tournaments, question sets, and discussion.
