Quick action by a passing motorist averted what possibly could have been a serious fire at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Frank S. Downey on South, shortly after midnight this morning. Lenman Hall, driving past the home noticed flames flashing across the window. Dashing to the house, he found the door unlocked, entered and tore burning curtains from the window and stomped them out. Dr. and Mrs. Downey had gone upstairs only a few moments before they heard Hall calling to them from the foot of the stairs. The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in a bridge lamp, which ignited the window curtains and the davenport.

The filling station of Frank Schurr at the South end of Sidney on the Dixie highway was broken into and burglarized sometime last night. The crime was discovered when the station was opened for business this morning. About $2 in money left in the cash draw, a .22 caliber rifle and a wrecking bar were reported missing. The lock on one of the gasoline pumps was broken and apparently some gas pumped out. Entrance was gained by breaking the window in the front door.

The storm that moved through the area Sunday afternoon, bringing some much-needed moisture to parched lawns and fields, also brought with it winds that caused some minor property damage and disruption of utility services. Heaviest damage apparently was at the fairgrounds where a broken tree limb falling on parked cars resulted in approximately $650 damage to three vehicles. The storm also blew down a large limb from a tree on Port Jefferson road in front of the E.J. Garmhausen property, blocking traffic until it could be removed by street crews.
