Church sets sewing day

SIDNEY — Holy Angels Church has scheduled Wrappred in God’s Love Afternoon of Service for Oct. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus hall, 1300 Fourth Ave.

Sponsored by the outreach committee of Holy Angels parish, the event is open to anyone who wants to volunteer to assist with any of a number of projects.

Pillowcase dresses will be made to be donated to girls in the U.S., Ghana, Chile, Philippines, Tanzania, Honduras and Haiti. The Holy Angels project has sent more than 1,500 dresses.

Also that day, people will knit or crochet prayer shawls to be given to area residents who need support. Volunteers interested in participating should take a 14-ounce skein of yarn and size N9-K 10 crochet hooks or size 13-15 knitting needles.

Another project will have people sewing small bags to hold beads. The Beads of Courage project provides the bags to children who are seriously ill.

Volunteers may choose to make prayer cards or rosaries to for insertion into pockets on prayer quilts or to make fleece blankets for Project Linus, a national effort to provide security blankets to children in hospitals and shelters. The blankets made during the Sidney Afternoon of Service will be distributed locally.

Volunteers can make any of these items at home and deposit them in a red bin at the church.

Participants in the Oct. 17 event at the hall should take sewing machines, sewing scissors, fleece fabric 40 inches by 40 inches, pillowcases or wash-and-wear fabric.
