SCARF close to goal, seeks funds for animal shelter

Letter to the editor:

The Race to The Finish Campaign is well underway as SCARF works to reach our goal in raising funds for a new animal shelter. The Race to The Finish is the latest campaign undertaken by SCARF and will help us reach our goal of $2.4 million estimated to be needed to build the Bob Sargeant and Family Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. SCARF is working to collect 500 donations of $500 with each donation constituting a “lap” in the race. Each $500 contribution will be noted on the PAWS of Fame and gives the donor an entry into a drawing for an exciting race package consisting of box seats for two at Eldora’s Four Crown Nationals in September 2018 donated by NKTelco.

To date, 245 PAWS of Fame Sponsorships have been received leaving 255 to go. The current pledges and cash total is $2,272,414.07 which is 94.68 percent of the goal.

Donors are able to make their pledge payments over a three year period. The timing of this campaign coincides with many persons’ end of year giving as they determine their final tax-deductible contributions for 2017.

Freytag and Associates have been retained to develop plans and report they are in the Design Development Phase. They are working directly with Michael Barnard of Shelter Planners of America on design details and equipment specifications. They will have drawings prepared by mid-December for use in updating the opinion of probable project cost that was originally prepared by Shelter Planners of America and presented to SCARF in January 2015. Following review of the drawings and desired specifications with the County Commissioners and the SCARF Board of probable project cost, they plan to complete the construction documents for a winter bid date by the County Commissioners.

We are aware of many gifts being made in honor of a loved one. We believe the PAWS of Fame Sponsorship is a great gift for any pet-lover on your Christmas list. It’s the gift that will keep on giving for decades to come.

We would like to thank the community for their support of SCARF since our inception just five years ago. Through the generosity of individuals in Shelby County we will be able to make our goal of a new animal shelter a reality in the near future.
