Staff report

The Sidney High boys bowling team completed a perfect 10-0 season in Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division action with victories over Greenville and Trotwood recently.

This is the third consecutive year that Sidney has finished 10-0 in the North in boys bowling. And in 2013, the Jackets were 9-1, so it’s reached dynasty levels.

The Yellow Jackets, now 15-3, started out with a 2367 to 1833 domination of Greenville last Friday.

Damon Huffman had games of 243 and 213 for a 456 series, and Austin Simon rolled a 199 and a 212 for a 411. Josh Abbott added a 390 on games of 177 and 213.

Lucas Finke added a 200 and Jamie Wallis a 191.

Sidney had 1977 in the regular games to 1547 for Greenville, and 390 in baker to 286 for Greenville. Sidney’s second baker game was a 225.

The Jackets then went up against Trotwood and won easily 2334 to 1287.

Finke led the Jackets with a 447 on games of 222 and 225, and Simon had a 235 and a 200 for a 435.

Josh Abbott rolled a 257.

Sidney had 1931 in the regular games and 403 in baker.

“It’s such an amazing thing to go 10-0 in the North,” said Sidney coach Trent Knooop. “This is a great moment to enjoy. It’s tough to go undefeated in a good division, let alone three years in a row. We will enjoy this as long as we can but we have to get back to work with the GWOC tournament coming up Saturday and the sectionals next week.

He paid tribute to the five seniors on the boys team.

“We have five seniors boys (Jamie Wallis, Damon Huffman, Cole Cartwright, Shane Herbert, and Sean Allen),” Knoop began. “They all were a pleasure to coach this season. I couldn’t ask for a better senior class for my first year of coaching. I haven’t seen a bowler improve as much as Jamie Wallis has. Even if we are struggling, Damon Huffman sure knows how to crack a joke, and bring the team right back together, and without his energy we would have a few more losses. Herbert, Cartwright, and Allen are all such great leaders. They know how to rally the team with their support and leadership. It was a honor to coach them.”

The Lady Jackets also closed with a pair of wins, beating Greenville 1980 to 1674, and winning by forfeit over Trotwood, which had just one bowler.

Against Greenville, Morgan Carey had a 405 series with games of 224 and 181, and Heather Gold rolled a 392 on games of 179 and 213.

Jenna Beatty had a 309 with a 151 and a 158, and Emily Reid 301 on games of 138 and 163,

Sidney had 1667 in regular games and 313 in baker. Greenville won in baker with a 317 but rolled just a 1358 in regular games.

In the match against Trotwood, Gold had a 172 and a 224 for 396, Ariona Grisham a 202 and a 192 for a 394, Morgan Carey had a 202 and a 151 for 353, Reid rolled a 168 game and Beatty 161.

The Lady Jackets finished 6-4 in the North and are 11-7 overall.

“We had two seniors on the girl side (Emily Reid and Ariona Grisham),” said Knoop. “Those two girls are probably two of the easiest girls to coach. They listen to anything I have to say, and they always want to get better. Emily was on JV for most of the season last year, and she has turned into a starter day in and day out this season. She has become a very dependable bowler. She is one of the greatest teammates I’ve seen around as well. Ariona has improved tremendously as well. She has been on a tear as of late, putting up good scores after good scores. She has a different type of a bowling style, throwing a backup ball, but she has gotten much more consistent. Honestly, she is one of the better spare shooters on the girls side as well. It was a blast coaching these two girls.

“I’ve continued to see growth in all the first throughout the season and I hope that continues into the tournament season,” Knoop added. “We are definitely rolling the ball well at a perfect time. I think we can make a good run if we keep our cool and confidence.”
