Lady Rangers take overtime win

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville Lady Rangers needed an overtime, but they got it done in the regular-season girls basketball finale Thursday night at New Knoxville, 40-31, in Midwest Athletic Conference play.

The Lady Rangers finish the MAC season with a 7-2 record, good enough to be part of a three-way tie for second place behind Minster, along with Fort Recovery and New Bremen. Overall, they are 14-8 and will play Lincolnview in the district tournament Feb. 17 at Allen East.

The two teams were tied at 27-27 after regulation, and Ashlyn Miller got the extra session off to a good start by draining a big three-pointer. her only bucket of the game.

Kenzie Schroer, who had just three points over the first three quarters, then sank two of her seven free throws in overtime to give Knoxville a five-point lead at 32-27.

Senior Rachel Leffel led the Lady Rangers with 18 points and was 6 for 7 from the free throw line. Schroer finished with 1o points, seven of those coming in the overtime, and all at the free throw line in eight attempts.

Abby Lageman had six and Jenna Schwieterman three.

Wapak 55, Minster 48

WAPAKONETA — Minster’s sixth-ranked girls basketball team ended the season on a down note, losing for only for only the fourth time in a 55-48 verdict at Wapakoneta in non-league action this week.

The loss ended Minster’s regular season with an 18-4 record. The Lady Wildcats were 9-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

The first half was tight throughout, but the third quarter proved to be the Lady Wildcats’ undoing. They were outscored 19-10, enabling Wapakoneta to open up a 43-32 lead heading to the final period.

The hosts were content to go to the free throw line in the fourth quarter and canned 10 for 12 in the final eight minutes. For the game, the Lady Redskins were 13 for 16, compared to just 9 for 18 for Minster.

Rosie Westerbeck scored 18 to lead the Lady Wildcats and Courtney Prenger added 15.

Minster is back in action on Feb. 20 in the district tournament at Lima Bath against either Ridgemont or Ada.
