Houston senior Macey Stang and Russia junior Maria Herron are co-Players of the Year in County softball, it was announced this week.

The two led their teams to co-league championships, both finishing with 10-2 records in County play.

Houston put three players on the first team and one on the second, and Russia led with the most selections on first and second teams with two on the first team and three on the second team.

Third-place Fort Loramie had two on first team and two on second team, and Anna had three total, including one on the first team and two on the second.

Jackson Center had two players named, and there were none from Botkins or Fairlawn on the first two teams.

Houston had two more named to the Honorable Mention list for six players overall getting recognized. Anna also had six, with three more named to the HM list, and Fort Loramie totaled six with two on the HM list.

Five girls who were first-team picks in 2015 repeated as first-teamers this year.

First team

Macey Stang, senior, Houston — Stang is hitting .494 on the year and leads Houston in the district finals Friday. She has a team-high 42 hits, with 12 doubles, two triples and six home runs for an .894 slugging percentage. She has scored 33 runs and driven in a team-high 42, and also had a good year on the mound, with a 1.81 earned run average in 461/3 innings, and two saves. She was a first-team pick last season also.

Maria Herron, junior, Russia — Herron, also a first-team selection last season, was the area’s top hitter this season at a gaudy .640, with an amazing 64 hits. She also led the area this season in runs scored with 48, and in doubles with 21, and finished with four triples and six homers for a 1.110 slugging percentage. She also had 44 RBIs, third-best in the area. She also stole 10 bases.

Paige Richard, senior, Anna — Richard led the Lady Rockets in hitting this season at .471, with 33 hits in 70 at-bats. She scored 30 runs and drove in 28, and was second in the area in triples with five. She also had 14 stolen bases. She was also first team last year.

Micalah Hensley, senior, Houston — A Wilmington College signee, Hensley is having an outstanding senior season for the County co-champs. She is at .471 this season at the plate, with five homers, 38 runs scored and 29 driven in. She also leads the Lady Wildcats in stolen bases with a dozen, and this is her second straight year of making first team.

Kristin Ratermann, senior, Fort Loramie — Ratermann hit .333 for the Lady Redskins this season, scored 20 runs and drove in 14. She also did a lot of the pitching for coach Brad Turner’s squad, finishing with a 2.64 ERA in 581/3 innings. She also had 10 stolen bases. She was on the Honorable Mention list last season.

Abby Meyer, senior, Jackson Center — Meyer led the Lady Tigers in hitting this season, finishing at .456. She had five doubles and three triples, and scored a team-high 26 runs. She was a second-team pick last season.

Holly Frey, senior, Fort Loramie — Frey finished the season with a .359 batting average and is on the first team for the second year in a row. She had 28 hits, scored 20 runs and drove in 21. She also belted a co-team high four home runs.

Maddie Borchers, junior, Russia — Borchers was Russia’s No. 1 pitcher and finished with a 14-7 record with one save, and a 3.48 ERA for the league co-champions. She struck out 106 batters in 1342/3 innings and issued just 23 walks all year. And at the plate, she hit .308, scored 33 times and drove in 19.

Kayla New, senior, Houston — New is Houston’s No. 1 pitcher and so far this season, she is 10-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 942/3 innings. At the plate, she is hitting .333 with 16 runs scored and 15 driven in. She is also a repeat first-team selection.

Second team

Sarah Monnier, sophomore, Houston — Monnier leads the Lady Wildcats in hitting at .519, with 40 hits so far this season. She has two homers and has scored and driven in 23 runs.

Claudia Counts, sophomore, Russia — Counts is one of three sophomores to make the second team from Russia. She hit .418 for the Lady Raiders, second behind Herron, and drove in 30 runs, also second on the team. She scored 19 times and hit a pair of homers.

Lexi Monnin, sophomore, Russia — Monnin is also a Russia sophomore, and finished with a .322 batting average. She was second on the team with 43 runs scored, drove in 19 and was co-leader in stolen bases with 14.

Jessica Boerger, senior, Fort Loramie — Boerger finished the season with a .356 batting average for the Lady Redskins, with three homers, 20 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Alexis Phillips, senior, Anna — Phillips finished with a .360 batting average for the Lady Rockets. She scored 24 times this season and drove in 13, and also had eight stolen bases. She was a second-team selection last season also.

Macey Richard, sophomore, Anna — Richard was second on the team in hitting at .442 and led the team in runs scored with 35 this season. She also led in doubles with eight and drove in 15 runs.

Megan Koppin, junior, Fort Loramie — Koppin was her team’s busiest pitcher this season, working 98 innings and finishing with a 7-5 record, a 2.93 ERA and 60 strikeouts against just 22 walks.

Lauren Monnin, sophomore, Russia — Monnin made the second team after she hit .353 this season. She scored 29 times and also drove in 22 runs, and was co-leader in stolen bases with 14. She was also second on the team in doubles with seven.

Connor Pipke, sophomore, Jackson Center — Pipke finished with a .438 batting average for the Lady Tigers this season, with 20 runs scored and 15 driven in. She also had seven doubles this season.
