Staff report

The Sidney High girls tennis team lost its season finale to West Milton, 4-1, but it didn’t detract from what was an excellent season for the Lady Jackets.

“This loss brings our final record to 10-10, which I am extremely pleased with.” said coach Emily Scheu. “All of the girls were more competitive this year, and we had more close matches, along with some great wins. For the next 10 months, we’ll be playing indoors at Schroeder Tennis Center in Tipp City, holding open court in the fall and spring, and conditioning next summer.”

Against Milton, Sidney’s lone win came at second doubles, with Janae Drees and Kathryn Saunders winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

“It was senior night, and Janae and Kathryn (both seniors) pulled out a big win,” said Scheu. “They played very well, and used the doubles strategies we had been working on all year. Milton is a good tennis team, and I am proud of how Janae and Kathryn played for their last match.”

At first singles, Madison Frank fought hard but lost 6-2, 7-6 (6-3).

At second singles, Hailey New lost 6-1, 6-1, and at third singles, Naomi Riegel lost 6-4, 6-3.

At first doubles, Auanna Edens and Carolina Gallimore lost 6-2, 6-0.

• The Lady Jackets also competed in the Division 1 Sectional Tennis Tournament in Troy, hoping to advance from there to the district tournament. However, none of the Sidney netters were able to.

In singles play, New won her first match, beating Morgan Ford of Piqua 6-0, 6-0. But she lost her second match in a tough way, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to an opponent from Wayne.

Riegel lost her first match 6-0, 6-1 to Jenna Demeter of Springfield, and Madison Frank lost her opening match to a Stebbins netter 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles play, Saunders and Drees were tough-luck losers in their first match against a Fairborn duo. The scores were 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

And Edens and Gallimore had a first-round bye before losing 6-4, 6-0 to a Northmont team.
