Staff report

The Russia girls dominated Sidney from the start and went on to whip the Lady Jackets in the season opener for both squads Friday night at Sidney, 54-41.

The Lady Jackets will try to bounce back tonight and get their first win when Lehman invades the Sidney High gym.

The Lady Raiders will try to make it two in a row tonight when they travel to Bradford for a non-league game.

The loss ended a 40-game regular-season winning streak for Sidney, which finished last season with a 22-0 record before tournament play began. It also ended Sidney’s streak of 22 consecutive wins at home.

Russia led 16-10 after one quarter, then had the score doubled at halftime at 28-14.

Any thoughts of a comeback by the Lady Jackets were squelched by Russia’s Maria Herron, who hit a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter, after win the margin was 36-30.

“Russia has threats everywhere,” said Sidney head coach Megan Mummey. “They did a good job of guarding Celena (Taborn) inside. Their defense is good and we couldn’t guard all their scorers. They pretty much have them all over the floor.”

Herron ended up with four three-pointers and finished with 13 points, and Laurissa Poling added 10 points.

Tiffany Hatcher was held scoreless in the second half, but her seven-point first half helped the Lady Raiders build their big margin at the break.

For Sidney, Taborn finished with 15 points in just over three quarters of play, thanks to early foul trouble. And Alina Kindle added 11 points.

Sidney got to the line 27 times but cashed in on just 14. Russia also struggled at the line, going 6-for-15.
