Staff report

Sidney expected to have a difficult time with Urbana and wasn’t disappointed, not pulling away until late in a 66-55 victory at the high school Friday night in non-league play.

The win put Sidney at 7-1 on the year heading to West Carrollton on Friday. The Hillclimbers are now 5-4.

Sidney pulled out to a 20-11 lead in the second quarter but let it get away, settling for a 28-27 lead at the half.

Urbana wasn’t going away either, despite the Jackets pulling out to a 41-33 lead in the third quarter. It took a three by Isaiah Bowser at the buzzer to give the Jackets the lead at 48-45 after three quarters.

Sidney was able to extend the lead to 61-53 on a stickback by Ratez Roberts, and the Hillclimbers got one back to make it 61-55 with still 2:39 remaining.

At that point, the Jackets decided to take the air out of the ball, and it worked to perfection. Josiah Hudgins hit a free throw, then Allec Gordon rebounded when he missed his second. Andre Gordon was then fouled and hit both for a 64-55 lead with the clocking winding down to just over a minute left.

Bowser had a big game for the Jackets, finishing with 21 points. Sophomores Andre Gordon and Roberts added 17 and 11, respectively, and Roberts also had eight rebounds, five steals and three blocks.

Russia 52, Covington 38

PIQUA — Russia had its hands full with Covington, but answered the ball each time in coming away with a 52-38 victory over the Buccaneers in the championship game of the Piqua Holiday Tournament Friday night at Piqua High School.

The win puts the Raiders at 7-2 on the season and they will be back in action Friday at home against Fort Loramie.

Russia led 12-11 after a quarter and extended it to 23-15 at the half. But the Buccs scored the first four points of the third quarter before the Raiders got a three from Cole Tebbe.

A 9-2 Covington run cut the lead down to one in the third quarter, but again, the Raiders responded and led 33-26 lead.

The Raiders led just 42-36 with two minutes remaining, however, when Tebbe followed up a missed free throw to make it an eight-point lead.

Tebbe and Dylan Cordonnier both finished with 19, Cordonnier’s coming on the strength of five three-pointers, four of those in the second half.

Troy Christian 52, Lehman 50

PIQUA — It looked like the Lehman Cavaliers would come all the way back from a nine-point deficit with 1:30 remaining in the game, but they couldn’t get the tying or go-ahead bucket despite several opportunities in a 52-50 loss to Troy Christian in the consolation game of the Piqua Holiday Tournament Friday night.

The loss leaves the Cavs at 1-5 heading into a makeup game Tuesday night at home against Springfield Catholic.

Lehman was still trailing 52-43 with 1:30 to go, but Dylan Arnold hit a three five seconds later to make it 52-46.

Then after a Troy Christian turnover, things got real interesting.

Arnold hit a jumper with 52.7 seconds to to go, and at the same time, Kameron Lee was fouled under the basket. Lee hit both free throws and just like that it was 52-50.

Troy Christian would miss the front end of two one-and-ones after that, but Lehman could never convert, turning the ball over. The kids played hard,” said coach Tim Gleason. “We just dug ourselves a big hole in the first half with turnovers. But I was real pleased with the effort. We played a very, very good second half, maybe the best half we’ve played this year.”

The Cavaliers turned the ball over 15 times in the first half, and trailed 25-16 at the break.

Lee finished with 20 to lead Lehman, Arnold had 11 and Preston Rodgers added 10.
