BOTKINS — Anna knocked neighboring Botkins out of a tie for first place in the County girls basketball standings with a convincing 52-35 victory over the Lady Trojans in action Thursday night at Botkins.

The win was Anna’s second in a row and marked the Lady Rockets’ first County win of the season in four tries. They are now 1-3 in the league and 5-5 overall, and host Fairlawn today.

Botkins lost its second in a row since starting the season 8-0. The Lady Trojans are now 3-2 in the league and 8-2 overall and are at New Bremen today in non-league action.

Botkins took an 11-8 lead after one quarter, but a disastrous second quarter followed, one that saw the Lady Trojans add just one free throw to their point total. Anna outscored them 15-1 to take a 22-12 bulge at the half, and the Lady Rockets built it up to 15 after the third quarter.

In the final period, Anna made a steady stream to the free throw line and had impressive results — 13 for 15. Taylor Kauffman was 6-for-6 from the stripe in the fourth quarter and 6-for-7 for the game. Jada Rowland was 4-for-4 on the night.

For the game, the Lady Rockets canned 19 of 26.

Kauffman and Emily Aufderhaar led the Lady Rockets in scoring with 10 apiece and Breah Kuck added nine.

For Botkins, Sarah Bergman finished with 12.

Anna hit 15 of 41 shots from the field for 37 percent and Botkins was 13 for 35, also 37 percent.

Anna had a big advantage on the boards, pulling down 36 to the Lady Trojans’ 23. Macey Huelskamp led Anna with eight rebounds.

Russia 79, Fairlawn 18

Russia rolled to a 48-3 lead at the half and breezed to a 79-18 win over Fairlawn in County action at Fairlawn Thursday.

The Lady Raiders go to 3-1 in the league and 10-1 overall with a big game today at home against Fort Loramie.

Fairlawn drops to 0-10 and is at Anna today.

Russia had five players in double figures, led by Maria Herron with 14. Jenna Cordonnier, Laurissa Poling and Cameo Wilson all had 14 and Tiffany Hatcher added 13.

Coldwater 57, Knoxville 40

COLDWATER — New Knoxville was unable to follow up its upset of Jackson Center on Tuesday with a win on Thursday, the Lady Rangers falling on the road to Coldwater in Midwest Athletic Conference action 57-40.

The first quarter was big for the winners, the Lady Cavs rolling to a 20-6 bulge behind five three-pointers and 17 points by Kourtney Diller. The Lady Rangers were unable to recover.

Kenzie Schroer had 11 and Ashlyn Miller 10 for New Knoxville, which is now 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in the MAC. The Lady Rangers are back in action Tuesday at Waynesfield.
