The Sidney High wrestling team hosted Covington and Arcanum in dual matches at the high school Wednesday night.

“We have a very young team and we were missing our two-time district qualifier Javon Purk (195) from the lineup,” said Sidney head coach Clayton Westerbeck. “In his place, though, Jordan Marvin wrestled and won a hard-fought match in overtime.”

Senior JC Voorhies at 170 wrestled a state placer in Covington’s Lance Miller.

“Even though he lost, JC showed great leadership and effort,” said Westerbeck.

Returning district qualifier Allen Tangeman of Sidney lost a close 2-0 decision.

“It was not our night and we didn’t wrestle our best, but with that said, it was a good opportunity to learn and grow,” Westerbeck said. “I have two excellent assistant coaches in Phil Nikolai and Ryan Shurts and we are improving.”

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Friday and Saturday in the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay High School.

The junior varsity wrestlers will go to Ben Logan on Saturday.

Covington beat both Sidney and Arcanum in the duals Wednesday.
