Record falls

Staff report

As expected, Fairlawn had an easy time with a young Mechanicsburg team Tuesday.

And as expected, senior standout Nathan Lessing became Shelby County’s all-time scoring king.

In a game that ended 101-43, and was 63-10 at the half, Lessing scored 29 points in just 13 minutes of action against the Indians.

He went into the game needing just 19 points to surpass former Fort Loramie standout Tom Brandewie’s 1,834 career points, and with 5:13 remaining in the second quarter, he did just that on a layup.

He finished the first half hitting 11 of his 13 field goal attempts and scored 25 points. He added just four more in the second half to finish with 29, giving him a career total now of 1,845. He also finished the game an amazing 13-for-16 from the floor, 81 percent.

Brandewie was unable to make it, but sent a message that was shared with the crowd.

“I wasn’t focusing on the record,” Lessing said. “I just want to do as much as I can to help our team win the game. My teammates gave me the ball and I just did what I normally try to do for our team.”

“It’s a great milestone for Nathan to achieve,” said Fairlawn coach Justin Tidwell. “I’m proud of him and I know his teammates are proud of him also because they helped him reach it. Nathan does a great job of getting to the rim and tonight was no exception. All of his hard work over the last six years has paid off.”

Mechanicsburg is in a rebuilding mode and is now just 1-10 on the season. The Indians did not have enough for a full junior varsity team, so the JV game was only two quarters long. Their roster includes just three juniors, and the rest are freshmen and sophomores.

Fairlawn rolled to 32-5 lead after a quarter, and the only suspense remaining was Lessing’s quest and whether or not the Jets would hit the century mark.

In addition to Lessing’s 29, Nick Brautigam had 16 and both Luke Hickman and Josh Reck added 10.

Drew Brautigam pulled down nine rebounds, Hickman eight and Lessing seven. Hickman also had six assists.
