Staff report

Shelby County League Player of the Year Maria Herron of Russia was named recently to the Division 4 All-Ohio and All-District first teams by the Southwest District Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association.

Herron was one of only six players in the Southwest District to be named to the All-Ohio first or second teams.

Riverside’s junior shortstop Kristin Davidson was a second-team selection.

Herron, who shared County Player of the Year honors last year, led the Lady Raiders to the outright County title, a perfect 12-0 record in league play and a 20-7 overall mark. She hit .609, second-best in the area, had a team-high 16 doubles and four homers, tied for the team-high in triples with three and led the Lady Raiders in runs scored with 33 and RBIs with 41. And in 102 plate appearances this season, she struck out only twice. She wound up with 56 hits this season.

In addition, she broke 13 school records during her career, including most hits in a season and career, most runs scored in a season and career, most doubles in a season and career, most triples in a season and career, most home runs in a season and career, best batting average in a season and career, and most career RBIs.

Riverside’s Davidson was third in the area in hitting with a .574 average, with 59 hits, 46 runs scored and 37 RBIs.

All-District

Herron was also first-team all District, as was Davidson, but they were both joined by teammates who made the second team.

From Russia, junior pitcher Grace Saunders was named to the second team after finishing with 15 wins for the Lady Raiders and posting a final 1.73 ERA in 83 innings of work. She also hit .382.

From Riverside, power-hitting junior Marissa Davis was named to the second team. She belted an area-best 11 home runs this season and also drove in 54 runs and had 53 hits. Twenty-one of her hits were for extra bases.

Houston senior Jenna Jarrett, a first baseman, was named to the All-District honorable mention list after hitting .461 this season for the Lady Wildcats.
