DEGRAFF — Shady Bowl Speedway hosted its annual “Farmers Night” last weekend, with six divisions of stock cars. The annual event saw dash, heat and feature winners receiving produce from local farm markets. In addition to the produce each winner received a fresh-baked homemade pie.
Sidney’s Rob Bryant won the pure stock feature for his third win of the season. Bryant is sponsored by McIntire Painting. Jason Purtee was second, with dash winner Jay Lakins Sr. third, Lane Crabtree fourth and John Eastman fifth. Jay Lakins Sr. was making his first start at the Bowl in over 20 years.
The late model 35-lap feature saw Ross Klinglehoffer take the lead at the drop of the green. Klinglehoffer led through lap seven, when Jacob Muncy took the lead. Muncy led the next 11 laps as he and Mike Ward raced for the lead. Ward passed Muncy on lap 20. Ward set sail for the checker, but Muncy had other plans as he retook the lead on lap 24.
Muncy went on to win his third feature of the season in his Muncy Motor Sports Chevy. Ward held on for second, with Brian Reeser turning in a fine effort to finish third. Jim Lewis Jr. and Klinglehoffer rounded out the top five. Muncy carried the checker for the dash, with Curt Frazier winning the heat. Brian Fries was fast qualifier with a 13.03 lap.
The modified left a bunch of battered race cars, bruised egos and one driver being transported to a local hospital for treatment. Buddy Townsend led the first four laps before the madness started. On lap four, Klinglehoffer had an engine let go as the field entered turn three. The ensuing melee saw Klinglehoffer and Brad Yelton leave the track with the wrecker taking them to the pits. Both cars suffered heavy damage, but both drivers were OK.
On the restart, Townsend appeared to make contact with another car, resulting in his openwheeler hit the frontchute wall with the drivers side making contact. Townsend was assisted from the wrecked car and transported to Mary Routan Hospital. Townsend posted on social media that he was treated and released. When the green flag came out fast qualifier (13.468) Greg Stapleton took over the lead. The Troy resident never looked back as he put his Springhills Auto Wrecking sponsored car in victory lane for the third time this season.
Mike Carroll. Daniel McPherson, Chris Parker and Carl Stapleton rounded out the top five. Klinglehoffer was the dash winner, with Yelton and Carl Stapleton winning heat races.
Shawn Stansell led all twenty five laps to win the street stock feature. The win was the second of the season for the Dayton driver behind the wheel of his Stansell Painting sponsored Camaro. Jim Lewis Jr., Rodney Roush, Rob Schaeff and Josh Longstreth followed.
Nic Burnside was fastest in time trials with a 14.636 lap. The dash win was captured by Lewis, with Greg Winget and Roush winning heat races.
Jacob Muncy led lap one of the twenty lap compact main, before New Carlisle driver Josh Foltz motored by. Foltz went on to lead the rest of the way in his Vapor Royals backed four cylinder to his third feature win of the season. Fast qualifier (16.967) Nick Barrett was second, with Larry Adams third, Jimmy McElfresh fourth and Muncy fifth. Foltz was the dash winner, with Adams winning the heat.
In tuner racing Matt Jackson on New Carlisle was able to hold off a late race charge by Terry Eaton Jr. The win was the fifth of the season for Jackson in his Auto Plus Honda. Eaton, Chris Parker, Eddie Kemp, and Nick Barrett rounded out the top five. Eaton took the dash win, with Jackson setting quick time with a 15.471 lap.
Garrett Adams was the winner of the spectator drag races as he just edged out Jacob Muncy. Both were driving Dodge trucks.
This Saturday will be ‘Military Night,” with all active and retired military members admitted free with proper ID. The late models, street stocks, pure stocks, modifieds, compacts, tuners and spectator drag races will be on the schedule. Racing will begin at 7 p.m. In addition, the rained-out car show will be held. Registration will start at 9 a.m., with awards at 3 p.m.. There will also be a swap meet and arts and crafts area. Vendors can set up at 9 a.m. The will also be a pin-up contest and a flame throwing contest. An Elvis impersonator also will be performing.
