Unemployment rates lower in May

SIDNEY — Shelby County’s unemployment rate dropped a little in May.

Unemployment was 3.8 percent in Shelby County in May, down from 4.0 in April, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Office of Workforce Development, Bureau of Labor Market Information.

The county unemployment rate in May 2015 was 4.3 percent, which is not seasonally adjusted.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in May, down from 5.2 percent in April and up from 4.9 in May of 2015.

Nationwide the unemployment rate for April was 5.0 percent, the same as in March and down from 5.4 percent in April 2015.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary May 2016 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 2.9 percent in Mercer County to a high of 10.8 percent in Monroe County. From April, unemployment rates decreased in 76 counties, increased in six counties, and did not change in six counties. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio was 4.6 percent in May.

Ten counties had unemployment rates at or below 3.5 percent in May. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer were: Holmes, 3.2; Auglaize, Delaware, and Putnam, 3.3; Hancock and Wyandot, 3.4; and Darke, Madison, and Union, 3.5 percent.

Six counties had unemployment rates above 7.5 percent in May. The counties with the highest rates, other than Monroe were: Jefferson, 8.2; Noble, 7.8; Meigs and Morgan, 7.7; and Harrison, 7.6.

Surrounding counties’ unemployment rates for May (compared to the April rates) were as follows: Allen, 4.4 (same); Auglaize, 3.3 (same); Champaign, 3.9 (down from 4.0); Darke, 3.5 (down from 3.9); Logan, 3.9 (down from 4.0); Mercer, 2.9 (down from 3.0); and Miami, 3.9 (down from 4.1).

Unemployment rates in and around Shelby County decreased slightly in May. Even though rates are decreasing, they are still basically around the same they were last year at this time.
