Ohio man gets 14 years for drive-by shooting in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man has been sentenced to serve 14 years in prison for a drive-by shooting that seriously injured a 12-year-old girl in Columbus.

The Columbus Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/297Fiaw ) Jonza Meek was sentenced Thursday, nearly a year after he was convicted of aggravated robbery, felonious assault and weapons charges.

Meek’s sentencing was delayed by several unsuccessful motions seeking a new trial after a key witness recanted his testimony.

Prosecutors say Meek’s intended target was Shawn Nelms Jr., who testified that he had been robbed by Meek and another man during an earlier drug deal.

On Aug. 25, 2014, Meek fired at Nelms as he ran for cover behind a duplex on Hallidon Avenue. Jaymi West was struck in the chest but survived after undergoing emergency surgery.
