ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — An Emirati businessman detained by police after a hotel clerk raised suspicions that he could have links to terrorism is pursuing legal options while authorities in northeast Ohio investigate what happened.
Businessman Ahmed al-Menhali (AH’-med ahl-men-HAHL’-ee) was detained by police at gunpoint June 29 at an Avon hotel before they determined he wasn’t a threat. Police responded to 911 calls from the clerk’s family expressing fears that al-Menhali could have ties to the Islamic State group.
Al-Menhali told The (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram he just wants to be sure someone finds out how the events resulting in his arrest unfolded. He says he told the clerk he couldn’t speak clearly because of an earlier stroke.
Al-Menhali’s attorney says he’s conducting a thorough investigation of the incident.
