Retired Ohio judge appointed to hear indicted mayor’s case

HILLSBORO, Ohio (AP) — A retired judge from northeast Ohio has been appointed to hear the case of a small-city mayor in southwest Ohio who’s also a veteran standup comedian.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor named former Summit County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Ann Cosgrove for the proceedings in Highland County. Drew Hastings was indicted there Tuesday on four felony counts including election falsification and theft in office.

The Times-Gazette of Hillsboro reported that Highland County Judge Rocky Coss recused himself.

Cosgrove was also appointed in 2013 to oversee cases growing out of a grand jury investigation into other laws broken related to the rape of a teen girl during a Steubenville house party in 2012.

Hastings says he has done nothing wrong. His first court appearance is set for Aug. 1.
