Ohioan who overcame paralysis will speak at GOP convention

CLEVELAND (AP) — The list of speakers at next week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland includes a man from northwestern Ohio who learned to walk again after he was paralyzed in a car crash.

The partial list released Thursday doesn’t include any current or former elected officials from Ohio.

But it does include Brock Mealer, who is from Wauseon (WAH’-see-ahn), west of Toledo. Mealer was given a 1 percent chance to walk after a car crash that killed his dad in 2007.

His brother also was hurt but went on to play football at Michigan, and Brock Mealer began rehabilitating with the football program’s strength and conditioning coaches and at the university hospital.

Brock Mealer led the football team onto the field in 2010 using two canes. He’s now able to walk unassisted.
