The Hughes and Davis cane and cider mill at Jackson Center is a very busy place these days. A full force of employees are at work making cane molasses and apple cider. They have taken a contract to furnish a Kentucky firm with 800 barrels of cider. They already have 200 barrels on the mill lot and are getting out the cider just as fast as possible.

W.E. Lewis has sold the Wagner House barber shop to Harry Frey. Mr. Frey will conduct two shops, the one he is has running opposite the Monumental building, and the shop at the hotel, where Dwight Woodruff will be in charge.

E.W. Bingham, who recently resigned as manager of the Campbell Furniture store, will hereafter be associated with the Sidney Realty Co.in the six-story Oldham building.

In connection with the ladies’, Mayor for the Day, Dorothy Morrison today sent a special invitation to President Franklin D. Roosevelt to attend the affair. The president is enroute to Dayton for a special appearance.

Instrument and vocal trios of Sidney High school students presented a special musical program for members of the Sidney Kawanis club at their luncheon meeting yesterday at the Hotel Wagner. Members of the instrumental trio were Dorothy Dull, piano, and Robert Scheiber, violin with Dorothy Leach on the cellist. The vocal trio was composed of Jane Masteller, Virginia Stump, and Caryl Whited.

Shelby county district Boy Scout officials are completing plans for the fall camporee of the district to be held Oct 22-24 at Tawawa Civic Park. Directing the planning for the three day affair is James Rieck, chairman of the district camping and activities committee. He is being assisted by a committee composed of Don Reese, camp chief, and Horace Long and Norman Watts, assistant chiefs. Some 250 boys, representing 32 scout units in the county are expected to participate in the camporee.

A total of 24 draftees left Sidney today for induction into the United States Army. The total call for Shelby County for October was 50 men, Twenty-six enlisted in various branches of the service. The average age of this group is 19.

Sixteen encampments dotted a 20-acre wooded site along the Great Miami River, at Tawawa-Maplewood Road over the weekend when Great Miami Long Rifles Association held its annual fall outing. The event attracted some 64 participants from area clubs. Period clothing dating from 1840 or before was the required dress. Primitive-type activities were offered, including a bakeoff in which contestants prepared their recipe in a cast iron dutch oven, embedded in a pit of hot coals. Other activities included line shooting matches in the muzzleloader competition; a survival walk and knife and tomahawk competitions. Cooking competitions were held for the ladies.

Working for the United Way is like riding a bike, said Judy Wagner, you never forget. Mrs. Wagner has returned to Sidney from retirement in Florida to serve as interim executive director of the Shelby County United Way. A 13-1/2-year veteran in that position, Mrs. Wagner will work as executive director and coordinate the fall fund-raising drive which wraps up the first week of November.
