A choice of whether to return to Vietnam or leave the military service led William Rankin to a Sidney Police Department career that will end soon after more than 20 years. “I’ve enjoyed this a lot more than the service,” Rankin said. “Even though there have been stressful times.” He was stationed in Iceland when he learned about an upcoming civil service test for a police officer in Sidney. After being hired here, he wasted little time in beginning his new job, leaving the military on Thursday and starting work as a policeman the following Monday.
