Oct. 16, 1915

Incorporation papers for the Suction System Cleaning Co. of this city, organized for the manufacturing and selling and dealing in suction cleaners, were issued today. The incorporators are G.E. Cyphers, E.D. Kiser, L.B. Kelley, F.D. Christian and Dr. A.W. Hobby.

This morning in the auditorium of the high school, a Riley program was presented with Mrs. Ida Hall in charge, to honor the birthday of James Whitcomb Riley which occurred this month. Six students taking part in the event were Warren Enyeart, Margaret Duncan, Doris Faust, Robert Kaser, Grace Fogt, and Edith Cronley.

75 years

Oct. 16, 1940

Co. I of the 148th infantry, Ohio National Guard, with headquarters here was mobilized for a year’s training period and subsequent induction into the United States Army at 7 o’clock this morning. All members of the company reported for duty and were issued equipment and clothing under the direction of Capt. Roscoe Stump. They will remain under his orders and will be kept on duty eight hours a day, receiving special instructions. Tenative plans call for the local unit to entrain next Tuesday for Camp Shelby, Miss. Where they will join other units for combat training.

Tomorrow some 3,000 Shelby county men will register for military service under the national selective service act, and final arrangements were made last night at a meeting of precinct election board clerks, presided over by Clyde Milhoff, clerk of the county board of elections, who will be in charge of this county’s registration.

Oct. 16, 1965

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL — It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers again on top of the baseball world thanks to two great pitchers and a lot of light hitting, fast running guys who never knew when they were licked. One of these pitchers, dandy Sandy Koufax, made it a glorious 1965 for the Dodgers Thursday when he blanked the Minnesota Twins on three hits to shut them out 2-0 and give the Dodgers their third world championship in the last six years.

Mrs. Oscar Bushmann and Mrs. L.S. Kirby of Sidney were the hostesses with Mrs. Walter O. Decker and Mrs. W.F. Heitzman of Piqua when the Piqua Country Club Bridge group held their Tuesday noon luncheon meeting, Sidney winner of the bridge prize were Mrs. C.D. Beck, Mrs. D.H. McKellar, Mrs. Gordon Palmer, Mrs. F.A. McLean and Mrs. Boyd Mahuron.

Oct. 16, 1990

A number of local groups, schools, and individuals have been sending local servicemen and women stationed in the Mideast cards and letters and these tokens of remembrance are much appreciated, according to a Port Jefferson Marine stationed in Saudi Arabia. Sgt. Richard D. Grubbs writes to the Sidney Daily News that he has received tremendous support from Shelby County area people and that it is very meaningful. Grubbs is the son of Marion Grubbs, Jr. of Port Jefferson and Margaret Grubbs of Sidney.

QUINCY — Two Springfield people were rescued from the Great Miami River dam at Quincy Saturday morning after their boat apparently lost power and capsized, authorities said. Don Robinson and Pauline Smith were rescued by Quincy Fire Department and Rescue Squad personnel as they were trapped against the low dam, said Fire Chief Thomas Weiskittel. The two were among a group of people staying in a cabin along the river. They decided to take a boating excursion Saturday morning, but the swift current caused problems.
