New Bremen to start all-day kindergarten

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen Local Schools 2016-2017 kindergarten students will be the first in the district to experience all-day, every-day kindergarten.

Half of the schools youngest pupils will begin school Aug. 25 and have Aug. 26 off. The other half will start classes Aug. 26 and have Aug. 25 off. All kindergarten students will then attend from Aug. 29 on.

The first day of school for students in grades 1-12 will be Aug. 24.

Several important dates precede the start of classes, however. On Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Aug. 17 from noon to 8 p.m., students and their parents can pick up class schedules and pay required fees. Elementary and junior high students need to pay fees in the junior high office and high school fees will be collected in the high school office. School fees will be waived for families who are eligible for the federal free lunch plan if they complete appropriate paperwork.

Meet the Teacher Night will be Aug. 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. The event provides an opportunity for children and their parents to talk with teachers and walk through their class schedules.

Students will see a few new staff faces in the halls when they return to school later this month.

Sarah Ross is the only new teacher. She’ll lead classes in Spanish. Other additions to staff and faculty are Treasurer Jill Ahlers, Intervention Specialist Bill Evans and cafeteria workers Della Conradi and Laura Freels.

A video production class will be offered this year. Other new programs are the Cube (college, career, community) and the college and career class.

School times will be 8:13 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children in grades kindergarten through fourth, 8:13 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. for children in grades five through eight, and 8:05 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. for high schoolers.

Lunch prices will be $2.80 for elementary students; $2.90 for junior high and high school students; and $4.30 for adults. Milk will cost 35 cents.

Reserved seat season football passes will cost $27 for adults; general admission adult volleyball season passes will cost $22.50. Fall student season passes are $30. Family passes, which admit two adults and their K-12 New Bremen students cost $110 for reserved seats, $100 for general admission. Senior citizen passes for people 60 and older cost $35. High school football tickets at the gate will cost $6 each. Tickets for individual junior high football and all volleyball games cost $3 for adults, $2 for students.

Season passes will be available at the high school office through Sept. 2. The first football game is an away game against Bradford, Aug. 26. The first volleyball game is at home against Lehman Catholic, Aug. 25.
