Gierhart marks 100th birthday

DENVER, Colo. — Erna Gierhart will celebrate her 100th birthday, Aug. 3, 2018, at a party in the home of her daughter in Denver, Colorado, where Gierhart now resides.

Gierhart was born, Aug. 3, 1918, in Hillstad, Montana, and grew up outside of McIntosh, North Dakota. As a young woman, she moved to Oakland, California, where she met her future husband, Melvin Gierhart, at a YWCA dance. Following a whirlwind, three-month courtship, the couple married and moved to Melvin’s hometown of Sidney, Ohio. They lived for many years in Port Jefferson before moving to Shawnee Drive in Sidney in the early 1990s.

Gierhart worked for Copeland Refrigeration for 33 years and volunteered for 30 years at FISH Thrift Store, where she continued to work until recently. She is a 70-year member of the First Christian Church of Sidney.

She has two daughters: Patricia Johnston, of Denver, and Joy Milford, of Clearwater, Florida. She has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her hobbies include fishing, knitting, crocheting, puzzles and watching game shows.
