Ben Coulson received word from Columbus this morning that the plans for a sewer system for Sidney submitted to council by him a few weeks ago have been approved by the State Board of Health.

The board of directors of the Sidney Electric Railway Co. met last evening and elected H.T. Mathers, president; Frank Hunter, secretary, and Charles Timeus, treasurer. Mr. Mathers said this morning that work would start at once on securing the right of way and he believed that with a vigorous policy the road could be running cars from Sidney to St. Marys, through Loramies and Minster before October.

A meeting held in the office of H.E. Bennett Realty Co., last night, plans were completed to hold a combined drive in Shelby county for the Near East, European and Chinese relief funds. The following officers were selected: James Anderson, chairman; J.E. Russell and J.E. Swanders, vice chairmen: L.M. Studevant, treasurer.

The confectionery stores of this city have made the following changes in their prices: reducing sodas to 11 cents; crushed fruit dopes to 11 cents; malted milks to 17 cents, and chocolate milk shakes to 11 cents.

Fred Hegele will take up his new duties as superintendent of streets tomorrow, according to Service Director E. Aneshansley with an opportunity to select an entirely new staff in that department, all eight employees having submitted their resignations to Mayor W.W. Wheeler yesterday. The mayor accepted the resignations.

Mrs. Herbert Buchanan today assumed duties as chief price clerk at the local price control board, succeeding Mrs. E.F. Conover. Leaving next week to establish her home in Missouri, Mrs. Conover recently resigned the position. She had been associated with the board since May 25, 1942.

Anna, Shelby county’s basketball champions, made an impressive debut in the district tournament with an appropriate win last night, defeating Olive Branch 38 to 35 at Springfield. Jackson Center lost its opening game to Tipp city 34 to 20.

TAMPA – Johnny Bench figures will take him only another year or two to convince the Cincinnati Reds he should be the club’s highest paid player.
Bench tried for the distinction this season, asking for a $500,000, three-year contract, but Sunday he settled for $80,000 for one year. Saying he still had lots of time to reach his goal.

Promotion of James Hoying to the position of advertising director of The Sidney Daily News has been announced by J. Oliver Amos, publisher.
In his new capacity, the former retail advertising manager will be responsible for all advertising – retail, national, classified and legal.

Chef Jim Henning’s third cooking class and wine tasting, featuring “Cajun and Creole Cooking,” will be held March 22 at the Fairington Restaurant.
The cooking demonstration will include preparation of Hollandaise sauce, roux and basic sauce. Henning also plans to teach participants the art of pan flipping.

Workers affiliated with one of two unions at General Housewares Inc. in Sidney have taken a vote to strike if a new contract with management is not reached. However, Paul Young, local president, believes a new contract will be ratified.
Local 108 of the Metal Polishers, Buffers, Planters and Allied Workers International Union voted to strike should a new contract not be reached. The current contract expires Friday at midnight.
