DAYTON — Lehman Catholic pulled away in the last two innings to beat Houston 10-4 at Day-Air Ballpark on Tuesday.
Lehman scored three runs in the first and two in the second to take a 5-0 lead, but Houston scored three in the second and one in the third to battle back.
The Cavaliers started to pull away in the sixth.
Hayden Sever hit a line-drive single to right field with one out, then Seth Kennedy hit a hard ground ball infield single with two outs. JD Barhorst then followed with a hard grounder infield single to drive in a run and put Lehman ahead 6-4.
David Brunner and Korban Schmiesing each hit singles to start the seventh. After a sacrifice bunt by Seth Knapke, Nathan Sollmann hit a grounder to third, and a throwing error allowed one run to score and give Lehman a 7-4 lead.
Sever then hit an RBI single on a ground ball to left field. One run scored on a balk, then Turney Lachey drove in one run on a ground out.
Korban Schmiesing picked up the win on the mound for Lehman. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on four hits and five walks with seven strikeouts. Brunner finished the game in the seventh and struck out two batters.
Sever was 3 for 4 with one walk. He scored four runs. Lachey, Kennedy, Barhorst and Brunner were each 2 for 2.
Luke Beaver was charged with the loss for Houston. He pitched four innings and gave up five earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five batters.
Beaver was 2 for 4 at the plate.
Kennedy drove in one run on a hard ground ball single to left in the first and Barhorst drove in a run on a single to center. Brunner drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Lachey drove in two runs on a hard ground ball single to center in the second.
The Wildcats battled back in the bottom half.
Jake Moorman drew a walk with one out, then Jeff Leist was hit by a pitch. Regan Steiner then hit a two-run triple to right field.
Adam Edwards drew a walk, then Tanner Voisard drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt to cut the gap to 5-3.
Ethan Deinhart drove in a run on a line-drive single to left in the third to cut the gap to one run, where it stayed until the sixth.
The Cavaliers dropped to 9-9 overall and 5-9 in Three Rivers Conference play with a 5-4 loss at Covington on Thursday. They were scheduled to host Jackson Center in a nonconference game on Friday and are scheduled to host National Trail on Saturday.
Lehman is scheduled to begin tournament play on Monday by hosting Mississinawa Valley.
The Wildcats drooped to 4-17 overall and 2-10 in Shelby County Athletic League play in an 8-5 loss against Jackson Center on Thursday. They are scheduled to host Ansonia on Saturday and are scheduled to begin tournament play on Monday by traveling to Valley View.
