FORT LORAMIE — The fall harvest season blood drive Oct. 17 at St. Michael’s Hall yielded a bounty of 238 donors. That total included 223 whole blood donors, 15 platelet/plasma donors, 219 whole blood donations, and four first time donors for 112% of the collection goal.
Michal’s hosts six community blood drives per year, all sponsored by the Fort Loramie American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Fort Loramie Community Service Club, St. Michael’s Church, and the St. Michael’s Knights of St. John.
All donors received the “Count on Me to Help Fight Cancer” T-shirt honoring October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, plus hot ham sandwiches and a variety of cookies in the Donor Cafe. They were served by American Legion Auxiliary volunteers Amy Westerheide, Norma Siegel, Lisa Ruhenkamp, Jane Meyer, Sue Hoying, Janet Barhorst, Janice Winner and Helen Barhorst.
Cancer and its treatment can damage blood cells causing many cancer patients to rely on regular blood and platelet transfusions to help them survive. One fourth of all blood donations in the U.S. goes to help cancer patients.
