125 Years

July 19, 1899

Yesterday a couple young ladies living in the north part of town drive into the country after some apples for their own use. Whether they got too many apples for a load for a buggy or not, anyway they broke the single tree and had to buy a new one. In order to pay for the single tree, they had to sell the apples, but are now content with the fact that the apples brought more than the single tree cost.

The Sidney Board of Health, chaired by Mayor Nessler, last evening instructed the Sanitary Officer to distribute notices to the people of Sidney to remove all garbage, manure and offal of all kinds from the alley and to all persons emptying slops in the alleys to procure a barrel or box and have it emptied once a week.

PLUM CREEK – Mrs. Hoewischer of Jim Town was in our vicinity Thursday morning.

ANNA – The Farmers Telephone Co. have changed their office from the bank building next to the post office.

HOUSTON – The Big 4 paint gang, 11 or 8 strong, have been within the railroad portion of this burg this week and are on the busy list putting the bridges, fences etc. in pretty good condition.

July 19, 1949

Persons who act as blood donors are not damaging their health; in fact, in a great many cases it is beneficial to their health. This statement was made today by Dr. R.E. Paul, president of the Shelby County Medical Society.

The Monarch Tool company of Sidney announced today it has initialed a policy of supervising the installation of 56 machines currently being shipped to European countries.

If the boys at Sexauer’s Bakery got fouled up on a special cake mix today, the error might well be ascribed to one of two things – either a laps of memory or a deliriously happy frame of mind. Sexauer’s walloped Wagner Ware, 7-1, to annex the City softball championship.

SWANDERS – Clarence Liess assisted Homer Stengel with his wheat harvesting last week.

An air-conditioned argosy trailer will be located at the Shelby County Fairgrounds this year during the fair where voter registration will be conducted. Two people, one representing each party, will man the registration posts.

FORT LORAMIE – “There is no money for salary increases at this time, said clerk Ferd Fleckenstein, explaining one consequence of raising costs at a Tuesday meeting of the board of education.

July 19, 1999

Someone who spray-painted graffiti on the concession stand at Custenborder Field, the Stolle Bridge and six picnic tables caused more than $1000 worth of damage Thursday night or Friday morning.

Duane Hatfield, a Northwood University senior from Sidney, received the $1,000 W.R. Crissey Memorial Scholarship for the 1998-1999 academic year. Hatfield is the son of Duane and Nina Hatfield of Sidney.
