ANNA — Botkins Trojans (0-3-1) battled to a deadlock in a 1-1 game against the Anna Rockets (2-1-1) in a WOSL matchup on Thursday at Anna high school.

It was the first time since 2014 that the Trojans avoided defeat at the hands of the Rockets.

“I’m very happy with this result,” Botkins head coach Lil Carson said. “I don’t think we’ve ever beaten or tied Anna Since the WOSL has been in existence. We’ve turned a corner. I think we graduated eight last year. I’ve only got six back that have played significant minutes.”

Botkins got on the board first when junior Aliyah Monnin scored on a corner kick at 31:27 in the first half.

The Trojans rolled their score into some great defense for most of the rest of the half. Anna controlled the ball for nearly 15 straight minutes towards the end of the first but was unable to make much of it.

That was, until sophomore Adelynn McVety got a pass from sophomore Tori Osborn, and was able to direct it to the back of the net to tie the game with 6:57 to play in the first.

“A tie is not bad, it’s not a loss,” Rockets head coach Greg VanGorden said. “It’s definitely not what we had in mind. I have to give Botkins credit, they studied and worked hard and played us extremely tough.

“We weren’t ready to capitalize on any chances that we got. So far this year that seems to be a theme. We just have to work on finishing and with that, the girls have to build up their confidence a little more. It hasn’t been an easy start to the season, but we have to be ready for all of our games.”

Anna is back in action on Tuesday where they will travel to take on Spencerville at 5 p.m.

The Trojans have a week before their next game on Thursday, Sept. 5 at home against Coldwater at 5 p.m.
