ANNA — Alex Shappie racked up 291 yards of offense by himself Friday as Anna advanced to 2-0 on the season after their win over Brookville.

Coming off of a dominant week one 37-0 victory over Indian Lake where its defense held the Lakers to just 50 yards of offense, the Rockets continued to look strong.

Anna combined for 425 total yards of offense.

Alex Shappie went 14 for 22 for 178 yards and two touchdowns on the night and ran for 113 on 10 attempts with two touchdowns as well.

His most frequent target, and brother, Aaron Shappie, managed 92 receiving yards on four receptions.

“He’s on all of our special teams, offense and defense,” Alex Shappie said of his brother. “I just get him the ball quickly and he takes off. He’s really fast and when he has an idea of where he’s going, he is really good.”

Zach Osborn scored one of his three touchdowns on four receptions for 27 yards. Osborn showed up more in the running game, getting 62 yards on 18 rushes and another touchdown.

The Rockets were able to hold the Blue Devils to 271 total yards of offense, but doubled them in first downs 18-9.

Brookville’s two costly fumbles (one of which was a scoop and score for Osborn) helped to keep momentum on Anna’s side.

The Rockets looked strong on the defensive side of the ball, breaking through the line for four total sacks and nine tackles for a loss.

Anna has its first conference game this Friday where they take on Minster at Booster Field at 7 p.m.

“They’re one of the best teams in the league,” Rockets head coach Nick Marino said. “We have to get ready to go. They have some good lineman and a good quarterback. It’s a big game for us and we’re excited.

Points, yards rack up in Sidney, Stebbins slugfest

Even with temperatures in the 90’s, Sidney and Stebbins’ Miami Valley League matchup on Friday in Riverside managed to have more points scored than degrees on the nearest thermometer.

Sidney beat the Indians 67-55 in their Miami Valley League opener to even their overall record to 1-1. The teams amassed nearly 1,000 yards of offense and combined to score 18 touchdowns.

Sidney showed signs of life offensively in a 48-21 loss to Bellefontaine in Week 1 but struggled with consistency.

There were no struggles Friday. Senior quarterback Ethan New threw a 52-yard TD pass to Tank Fleming on the first play of the night, and the TDs kept coming.

New completed 6-of-14 passes — but those six completions were for 299 yards and four TDs.

Tank Fleming caught three passes for 143 yards and two TDs, and Joelon Lyons caught two passes for 101 yards and two TDs.

New ran for 110 yards and three TDs and Isaiah Foster ran for 93 yards and two TDs. Ishhod Diamonde ran for 42 yards on two carries, one of which was a 38-yard TD run.

“I think Ethan New had a phenomenal game. Tank made a couple big plays early in the game,” Sidney coach Dave Taynor said. “Isaiah Foster was a workhorse throughout the day. I was really happy with the play of Joelon; he had a couple touchdowns.

“I mean, there’s a boatload of guys that made a lot of plays offensively. We’ve got to get a little bit better defensively. We played some decent defensive football. They’re an explosive offense, but we gave up a too many big plays.”

Sidney racked up all its points with star receiver Julius Spradling on the bench. He was still dealing with a nagging injury suffered in Week 1.

“He was probably pretty close to being ready to go tonight, and it would have given us more than just a weapon from an offensive standpoint; he’s a guy that can play both ways and keep give us enough depth on the defensive backfield as well,” Taynor said.

“We gave him another couple days to get some rest and hopefully get him back and roll from there.”

Sidney scored four straight touchdowns in the first half to take control and twice pushed the margin to running clock territory in the second half, but Stebbins scored the last three TDs to close the final gap to 67-55.

“Three quarters of really good football,” Taynor said. “Then we had a number of guys cramping, were trying to figure out some depth things, and we gave up a couple big plays on busted coverages and a punt return for a touchdown.

“That’s the negative part of it, but the positive part, we played good, explosive football. We felt like coming into the game that if they played cover zero matchup man against us that we were going to be able to throw the ball and run the ball for big plays. I think our guys responded extremely well.”

The Yellow Jackets had 562 yards of offense and the Indians had 421 yards.

Stebbins QB Devin McCormick threw for 238 yards and two TDs and ran for 71 yards. Andre McConnell ran for 99 yards and five TDs.

Sidney junior Marc Fleming forced three fumbles, two of which Hayden Westerbeck recovered and one of which Tanner Snider recovered.

The Yellow Jackets will try to keep up the success this Friday when they host Xenia (2-0, 1-0 MVL Valley Division). The Buccaneers beat West Carrollton 66-0 on Friday and started the season the week before with a 26-7 win over Beavercreek.

Fort Loramie searches for victory

Fort Loramie (0-2) will be looking for its first win of the season this Friday as they travel to Smith Field to battle Covington (2-0).

Covington seems to be turning a corner with its program already outsourcing its 2023 season 68-60 in its two games played.

Fort Loramie was shut out by Versailles on Friday 41-0 after losing the season opener to Minster 49-21.

Against Versailles, Fort Loramie trailed 35-0 at the half.

Fort Loramie looks to bounce back and get on its feet before hosting home games three weeks in a row following Covington.

Lehman Catholic getting warmer?

The Cavaliers (1-1) are hoping to kick off a winning streak following their victory over Southeastern on Friday.

Lehman managed to build on a 26-12 lead at halftime to go on to a 47-19 win.

The Cavaliers take on Benjamin Logan at Sidney Memorial Stadium this Saturday at 7 p.m.

Lehman’s victory was a rebound after falling to Delphos St. John’s in their season opener 54-27.

Ben Logan is 0-2 on the year so far after its 50-3 loss in week one to Bluffton and the 31-21 defeat at the hands of West Liberty-Salem in Week 2.
