Kellars celebrate 65th anniversary

Roland and Helen Kellar Sr. celebrated 65 years of marriage on Aug. 29.

The couple were married on a hot day on Aug. 29, 1959, at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Reverend George Stadler, and was followed with a reception in the church basement, where Roland, Helen and their guests enjoyed cake and punch.

The bridesmaids wore pink and turquoise which were the colors selected for this beautiful occasion. Marilyn (Roeth) Ryan served as Helen’s Maid of Honor and the duty of Best Man was performed by John Scarbrough. The bridesmaids included Joyce (Booher) Neth and Shirley (Durand) Heffner. Kathleen (Kellar) Lawson was the Junior Bridesmaid, while Debbie (Roeth) Brown served as the Flower Girl. Helen’s youngest brother David Roeth served as Ring Bearer. Ushers included Richard, Harold, Jack, and Fred Roeth, while the Acolyte was Gary Roeth.

After the wedding, the couple left for Leonardwood, Missouri where Roland continued basic training in the Army.

The couple first met at the original 36 Skate Club in Piqua in the fall of 1958. The couple have four children: Roland (Shylee) Kellar Jr., of Houston; Dan (Lisa) Kellar, of Toledo; Gwen (Doug) Shoemaker, of McCartyville and Christine (Brian) Helman, of Sidney.

They have had 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. One grandchild, Kevin, is deceased.

Helen is the daughter of the late Roy and Gertrude Roeth, of Houston. She has eight siblings: Richard (Nancy) Roeth, both deceased of Dayton; Harold (Luella) Roeth of Sidney; Jack-deceased (Barbara)Roeth of Troy; Fred(Carol) Roeth of Nebraska; Marilyn Ryan, of Springfield; Charles Roeth, deceased; Gary (Gretchen) Roeth, of Piqua; and David (Annette) Roeth, of Houston. Roland is the son of the late Raymond and Roberta Kellar, of Covington. He had two siblings: Ramona (Clyde) McGillvary, both deceased of Piqua, and Kathleen (Ted) Lawson, both deceased, of Covington.

Helen was a custodian at Hardin Elementary School before retiring in the summer of 2008. Roland retired in December of 2017 after 26 years in the maintenance department at Wilson Memorial Hospital. He previously worked at Dinner Bell for over 29 years in maintenance, electricity, and ammonia refrigeration.

Roland and Helen both enjoy taking walks and spending time with their family. They are members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington.
