Sept. 13, 1899

Hot weather! There is nothing better than Alexander’s Claret wine. It braces up the system against debilitating effects of the heat. Cheap as coffee. At Shine’s. – adv’t.

Mrs. W.H.C. Goode delightfully entertained about twenty-five of Sidney’s young people at her elegant home on north Ohio avenue last evening, complimentary to her guest, Floyd Walpole, of Pueblo, Colorado. Mr. Walpole attended school under Mrs. Goode at Pueblo, and is now on his way east to enter Harvard university.

100 Years Ago

Sept. 13, 1924

Policeman Ed Welsh arrested a young fellow at the Spot corner last night and placed him in jail on a bootlegging charge. Welsh found about a quart of bootleg liquor in the man’s local hotel room which he had been selling by the drink to his customers as they would visit his room.

FORT LORAMIE — A new oil well was started on the Joe Kaiser farm south of town this week. The rigging was moved from the Eilerman well which was shot last week and shows to be good oil.

Byron Joslin entertained at the county fair this week Joseph King of Galion and Isaac Randall of Piqua. They all served together in the Civil War.

Sept. 13, 1949

Never before in the history of Shelby county fairs have so many farm implements been displayed. In fact, there are so many this year that the fair board found it necessary to create a brand new midway this year to accommodate the variety of farm machinery from virtually every implement dealer in the city and county.

Sidney Women of the Moose are in the midst of a magazine sales campaign they are sponsoring to create a sum of money to purchase a hot pack machine to be used free by the public in treatments of infantile paralysis, arthritis, neuralgia, and similar afflictions upon recommendation of the attending physician or nurse. Mrs. William Fultz is the chairman for the project.

50 Years Ago

Sept. 13, 1974

Lloyd E. Lutz, Shelby County extension agent, has announced guidelines for the “open gate” farm visitation tour set for Saturday and Sunday. Several local agricultural organizations are sponsoring the farm tours to acquaint city dwellers on the workings of a farm.

Sidney is beginning to edge its way toward helping women achieve their goal to equality. Shelby County Mental Health Clinic, for example, is about to offer its second workshop “On Becoming Real.” A small group of women will attend five sessions aimed toward developing personal growth, increasing self-awareness, and developing a value system.

Sept. 13, 1899

Julie Davis, fifth-grade teacher at Northwood School, has been selected for the 1999 Educator to Japan Pro- gram by the Honda of America Foundation. Davis will leave for Japan on Oct. 16 and return Oct. 25. While in Japan she will observe the Japanese system of education. Davis, a graduate of Sidney High School, earned her master’s degree in education in 1996 at Ohio State University. She currently tutors four Japanese families on a weekly basis. Davis is also the Student Council adviser and newspaper adviser at Northwood.

Hiroyuki Yoshino, president of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., stands by Honda’s new luxury wagon, the Avancier, during the press announcement in Tokyo Monday. The Avancier offers two Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) engine options which clear Japan’s exhaust emission standards for year 2000 by 50 per- cent or more and Intelligent Highway Cruise Control (IHCC) that controls both vehicle’s speed and distance between cars during high-speed driving. The model will hit the Japanese market Wednesday, at the retail price between $19,344 and 22,291. Roger Lambert, Honda of America spokesman, said one of the engines, a V-6, for the new model will be made at the Anna Engine Plant. However, he said it will not have an effect on employment at the plant since sales are expected to be limited.
