Golf: Sidney boys finish 3rd in MVL tournament

SPRINGFIELD — The Sidney Yellow Jackets boys and girls golf teams traveled to Locust Hills golf club in Springfield on Thursday for the Miami Valley League golf meet.

The boys team finished in third place with a team score of 312 on the locust course, placing them just behind Vandalia-Butler (309) and Tippecanoe (311).

The top scores for the Yellow Jackets were Carter Wooddell (77), Brooks Taylor (77), Myles Steenrod (78) and CJ Goffena (80). Wooddell and Taylor tied for fifth individually and Steenrod tied for eighth.

Thursday’s finish earned the squad a fourth place finish in overall league standings for the year out of 10 teams. The squad finished first among the five MVL Valley Division teams.

Seven of the teams in the league shot a 340 or better in Thursday’s tournament.

The team will play in a Division I sectional at Reid Park in Springfield at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Werntz finishes 3rd in girls tournament

Sidney senior Tatum Werntz finished third individually in the MVL girls tournament on Thursday in Springfield.

Werntz shot an 83. She currently ranks first among MVL players with a nine-hole average of 40.80.

The Yellow Jackets finished sixth as a team. Antoinette Neu shot a 102, Hannah Weldy shot a 110, and Libby Spangler shot a 111.

Sidney is scheduled to wrap up regular-season play on Monday at Troy and will play in a D-I sectional on Thursday at WGC Golf Course in Xenia.
