SIDNEY — The Sidney Yellow Jackets girls soccer team blanked the Greenville Green Wave 7-0 at Sidney High School on Wednesday in a Miami Valley League matchup in a night of milestones.

“I’d like to be known for creating players that are dynamic and highly skilled,” Sidney head coach Kevin Veroneau said. “We still struggle getting players to play an attractive type of soccer. You don’t want to be known as a coach with a team of players who just play kickball.”

With the Yellow Jackets (11-5-1, 8-1) victory, Veroneau became the winningest coach in Sidney girls soccer history with 104 wins.

Senior Larkyn Vordemark became the first Yellow Jackets player with triple digit goals in a career with 101.

In the game, Sidney got on the board first with a goal from Katie McKinney to take a 1-0 lead with 27:56 to play in the first half. The Yellow Jackets added a second goal just a few minutes later from Madison Piatt to extend the lead to 2-0.

Later in the first, Vordemark found the net for her 100th career goal before Piatt scored again. Sidney took a 4-0 lead into the second half.

“We’re really focused on trying to get players to be less selfish,” Veroneau said. “You could see players struggling out there because they were forcing it. It took the whole game to get seven goals, we just talked about being less selfish.”

The Yellow Jackets kept the scoring going in the second half when Riley Randolph found the net to extend the Sidney lead to 5-0. Vordemark notched her second goal of the game just a few minutes later for number 101.

With just four minutes to play in the game the Yellow Jackets struck again when Anara Shroyer sent a ball into the goal for the final score of 7-0.

“We know that we can penetrate up the field on the lines,” Veroneau said about looking forward to the tournament. “Now our focus is on fixing our weaknesses in the back and fine tuning the attack, because other teams are going to drop off and try to shut us down.

“We have other ways to score and they’re going to put two or three players on our top goal scorers. We’ve got to have other players being able to step up and the only way we can do that is by passing.”

Along with the individual milestones accomplished in the game, Sidney worked its way into a three-way tie for the MVL championship as Butler fell to Tippecanoe 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets will battle MLV rival West Carrollton in the first round of the Division III district tournament on Oct. 17 at Sidney High School.
