About one hundred persons composed a party that went down the canal this morning to spend the day at the Steinle club house. They are celebrating the retirement of J.S. Laughlin from the office of County Auditor and holding the inauguration of his successor, R.B. Dill.

100 Years

Oct. 15, 1924

The Van Cleave Furniture store has a newly equipped kitchen department in the basement of their store on the south side of the square. The basement has been remodeled and a new lighting system is being put in these rooms.

Arrangements have again been made for the Sidney Municipal band to appear in three winter concerts. The price is $1 for the three concerts. They will be held in the Majestic Theatre where an evening of good music may be enjoyed in comfortable surroundings.

A corn cutting was held at the home of Fred Smith when thirteen of his neighbors came in and cut his corn crops. Smith recently broke his arm cranking his Ford when it kicked back.

75 Years

Oct. 15, 1949

Succeeding Harld Lendman as manager of Cussins and Fearn hardware store on West Poplar street is Paul From, who began his work at the store on Sept. 15.

Book club opened its year’s schedule this week at the delightful meeting in the home of the president, Mrs. Royon G. Hess, Port Jefferson road, Bon Air. Mrs. D.F. Mills is vice president, Mrs. F.A. McLean is secretary, and Mrs. Urban H. Doorley is treasurer.

50 Years

Oct. 15, 1974

BOTKINS – For its prize-winning entry in the Ohio State Fair FFA Booth Competition in the Conservation Division, four FFA members, Michael Gerstner, Mark Schmerge, Peter Cartwright, and Thomas Baumer, from Botkins High School and their instructor, Charles Freeman, are on their way to Kansas City to attend the National FFA Convention. They will hear President Geralt R. Ford deliver the keynote address.

Fifteen members of the Trailriders 4-H Club helped pick up trash Saturday along Millcreek Road as part of the group’s annual community project. Advisors Betty Umstead and Jenny Hatfield distributed plastic bags for the pickup.

25 Years

ANNA – Anna Local Schools face an estimated annual $466,000 loss in operating expense dollars in the year 2003. The school also faces fewer dollars this school year and may be asking residents for support. At issue is the property-tax dollars to be generated when the 15-year tax abatement for Honda of America Manufacturing ends Dec. 31, 2000. County and Honda officials have a different opinion on the company’s real estate value.

BOSTON – Audiences have seen figure skater Nancy Kerrigan shine on ice. Now listeners will decide whether she sparkles on the air. Kerrigan’s first pop single, “Shinning through,” is included on a new compact disk “Reflections Off The Ice – A Musical Tribute to Skating,” a compilation of music used by figure skaters.
