125 Years

Oct. 17, 1899

The News was printed at 2 o’clock this afternoon in order that the employees might attend the William Jennings Bryan meeting on the public square in Sidney at 3 o’clock. Large delegations from all over the county came in this morning. The delegation from Van Buren township was accompanied by the Kettlersville band. The delegation from Jackson township brought the Montra band. The delegation from Dinsmore township was accompanied by the Botkins band.

A large party of friends of Major J.S. Loughlin, who this week retired from the County Auditor’s office, gathered at his home on south Main avenue last evening and presented him with a handsome gold headed cane. The party was accompanied by the Reed band.

100 Years

Oct. 17, 1924

A deal is being consummated for the consolidation of the Mull Woodwork company of this city with the Anderson Body company.

All ex-service men who want their bonus application made out are asked to call the American Legion rooms Tuesday evening.

Piper’s Store has received a full car load lot of Linoleum. This shipment to our knowledge is the largest received by a local dealer. Half of the linoleum is to be put down at the Dorothy Love Presbyterian Home and is the Armstrong famous battleship linoleum.

75 Years

Oct. 17, 1949

An organizational meeting of the Shelby County Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) was held in the courthouse this week as a cooperative project of the Catholic Rural Life, Church World Service, and Lutheran World Relief. The nationwide program sends agricultural products such as corn and soybeans directly to Europe or those who do not have money with which to buy Marshall plan food. Co-chairmen at the meeting were E.E. Rees and A.F. Moon. Representing the cooperating agencies were Rev. Edward Dittman of Rhine, Rev. Edwin R. Allender of the Sidney Church of Christ, and Rev. J.J. Mittermaier of St. Jacob Lutheran church in Anna.

50 Years

Oct. 17, 1974

Milton Jelley, a senior at Ohio State University and son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Jelley has been awarded the American Farmer Degree for exceptional agricultural and leadership ability. He was presented with the honor this week at the 47th National Convention of the Future Farmers of America in Kansas City.

Jeanice Bernard, director of the Shelby County Board of Elections, reported that the county has 18,526 registered votes, compared to 17,784 in May for the primary election.

25 Years

Oct. 17, 1999

BOTKINS – Botkins High School senior Keith Platfoot has been named a Commended Student in the year 2000 National Merit Scholarship program. Some 34,000 students throughout the nation are being recognized for their academic promise. These students place among the top 5 percent of more than 1 million students who took a qualifying exam.
